Editorial Reviews

Winner of the 2012 Independent Music Awards for Best Instrumental Album, this release features two recent works of Michael Torke, written for the Liverpool Philharmonic's new music group, 10/10 Ensemble, which evoke the humidity, perfume, and leisure of these South Pacific islands. Techniques used have their antecedents in earlier works like Rapture, Adjustable Wrench, and Four Proverbs, as well as Torke's continuing exploration of melodic development from the past 10 years.

Those who already are fans of Michael Torke's music (and there are many of them out there) will find something comfortably familiar here, but with more "tropical spice" than usual. I wish the CD were a bit longer, maybe another piece or something, as it's just 51 minutes' worth of music, but I've found myself coming back to it again and again. The forces involved are of "chamber orchestra" proportions, though with some extra percussion instruments. This is cheery, joyous music that lifts the spirit, and with ample color and structure to keep the listener's interest. It's more relaxed (the whole recording) than pieces like "Bright Blue Music" or "Javelin," but delightful in its agreeable, friendly way. Most of the selections are short, and there isn't the incessant repetition that one finds in the more purely minimalist composers (though there's no question there's an element of "post-minimalism" in Torke's music in general). The sound samples on the website are representative of what you'll get. It's worth seeking out a good price. I got mine for under $9.00. Delightful stuff!

"Delightful" is the perfect word for this CD as stated in the previous review by John Gouwens. I heard Michael Torke's "Bright Blue Music" years ago and was in awe of his flair for arrangement, so I seek his work often. He continues to shine hear on 'Tahiti', his dedication to the atmosphere of the Tahitian landscape. Torke's clever instrumentation and rhythm are drenched in tropical bliss. Listening to the CD here in late November, I could almost hear the waves and the wind through the trees while the sun warms my skin...OK, that's laying it on thick, but this is certainly a musical getaway to be enjoyed throughout the year especially by fans of Torke's!

I can't seem to get enough of this album. Some days I have the fortune of being able to listen to Tahiti endlessly while I work, and I feel as though I'm off on some semi-conscious adventure in the Pacific. Highly recommended.
