Owen doesn't work alone and the cadre of characters that participate in his adventures become familiar as they are not 'one and done' in this series. You will learn about Street's past and how she brings a sensitivity that Owen may not have. You will find Diamond an interesting cross between self-deprecation and responsible public servant. You will watch Jennifer grow up and provide Owen assistance that is beyond his means. However old Ellie is, she continues to make reappearances and help bring familiarity to Owen canine training requirements. And Spot, while perhaps slightly over personified, usually lopes (or licks) to the rescue however and whenever needed. Through these familiar characters the series grows and makes the next book even more anticipated.
For those readers that are familiar with the Lake Tahoe area the series provides a familiarity of a different nature. Each visit to this beautiful area also brings a face to the story that has been read. Todd Borg is a master of description and detail, something that makes the reading more enjoyable. I see things differently after reading about where Owen travels.
Some mystery series are predictable. Sometimes you read and while the story path wanders and meanders, the paved highway towards resolution is clearly marked.Read more ›
On a positive note, the author showed great resolve and tenderness in his descriptions of abuse used throughout the book. And his knowledge of the Tahoe area is real pronounced throughout the book. Unfortunately that's all I found to be a positive for the book.
I think anyone that has a background in skiing may like this book. But I definitely would call it a thriller and I won't be recommending it to anyone.
Mr. Borg has given us a good, clean cut, spine tingling, mystery that will keep you on the edge of your chair during the entire book. The story is very well written and paced perfectly. As you read, there is never any question as to what is going on and why. Mr. Borg has given us a great murder mystery, a slight touch of romance, an abused woman fighting to gain courage in her life, and a spunky senior fighting to find out who almost killed his wife. Mr. Borg, now that I write this, I applaud you. You have multiple story lines going here and have written them without any confusion to the reader.
The characters are so well written and lifelike that you feel you are right into the melee. And, lest I forget, Detective McKenna's faithful dog Spot. By the time you finish this story you know these people, what they thought and went through. Just an awesome story!
I recommend this story for all ages.
I know you will enjoy your book.
