The kind tailor cuts out clothing for the mice using leftover scraps of fabric. The tailor is out of thread which he needs to complete a suit of clothes for the mayor and sends his cat to the store for a number of items including cherry colored twist, which the mouse-hungry conniving cat hides in the teapot. The tailor becomes ill, too ill to finish sewing the mayors coat. The cleaver mice sing and sew the garments for him and they complete all but one buttonhole. The guilty cat repents and gets the twist from the teapot and all ends well.
Unlike the illustrations in most of the current books of fiction for children, the colorful illustrations in this book are not only charming, they are inspiring.
Compared to my eighty-something years old copy, the binding appears to be equal, if somewhat different. The color plates -- remade, I am given to understand -- are superb.
I bought this as a Christmas present. Do your Christmas shopping early!
I bought it as a gift for my granddaughter.
