This book is a real blessing to me.

I was searching on amazon for Christian-based self-help books on depression and came across this one. Because amazon lets us do a "search" through the book, I knew immediately it was for me. I had it on pre-order before it was even released!

I was looking for an uncomplicated, Christ-based plan to help deal with depression. These are the seven steps the book presents that I am following:

1. Describe the situation
2. Identify Your Feelings
3. Uncover the Unhelpful self-talk
4. Predict the Behavior
5. Choose Helpful self-talk
6. Select the feelings
7. and again, Predict the behavior

The book, of course, coaches you in your walk through the steps. The book is written in a very friendly, easy-to-understand manner. There is no textbook garble or psychobabble or any "talking down" to the reader, which yes, unbelievably I have seen in books on depression. One of the chapters, which I have never seen in any of the other Christian-based books I've looked through, deals with building friendships with others. Since depression is so isolating, that chapter alone convinced me I needed this book.

IMHO any counseling/self-help that is not Christ-based is not worth the effort. I tried "positive psychology" for a while, but honestly, if you are a Christian and that positive psychology is not Christ-based, it will not take you very far. I have found that just following Christ alone is aid to alleviating depression, and this book takes it a step further with concrete biblically based tools that actively deconstruct our wrong thinking.

A big thank you to the author for giving us this book

In this book, Dr. Solie shows if you are suffering from depression, anxiety, anger, frustration, etc., you are not alone and there is help. She shows you can take charge of your emotions by: identifying what you are feeling, understanding the connection between your thoughts, feelings and behavior and choosing a new way to think that will produce positive behavior. Her book guides you through seven steps of dealing with negative feelings. Some of these steps include self-talk, what is a positive and negative way of talking to ourselves, building a relationship with God and friends, defeating depression and anxiety, conquering anger and finding joy.

I chose to read this book because I have been dealing with a situation that often leaves me suffering from several of the issues discussed in this book. Although while reading, I was a bit overwhelmed at all the steps and how much journaling it takes to deal with one emotion. At times I found myself wondering if I will be able to stick with it or if I will give up in defeat, because it takes more time than I have to devote to all the journaling and self- talk. At this point only time will tell. However, since reading this book, when I am faced with a situation I find myself referring back to see how "they" handled it and start my self-talk and journaling from that point. Hopefully it will come easier as I become more familiar with the steps.

If you are dealing with any of these emotions in your life, I would recommend this book, but be prepared to devote lots of time to it.

This is an awesome book! I was amazingly fortunate to see Dr. Solie for some therapy sessions a few years back for anxiety, panic attacks and depression. We used this method and it works. If you are struggling, give it a chance and you'll have success! I got the book to have on hand so that I can use what I learned to help others. Dr. Solie is an amazing woman of God who knows her stuff. SO glad she's put her knowledge in book form to help a wider audience!

Sincerely,
One set free!

There are self-help books and there are great books on helping yourself. "Take Charge of Your Emotions" is a terrific resource for anyone struggling with depression, anxiety or anger. Using a practical and pragmatic approach, Dr. Linda Solie gives the reader a workable and simple set of exercises to begin tackling the overwhelming emotions that can beset a person. One of the many things I loved about this book was Dr. Solie's down-to-earth approach. Often, self-help books from the Christian sector can leave a reader feeling that their problems stem from a "lack of faith" and, instead of helping, leave the reader feeling like a failure. Dr. Solie offers the reader choices, not platitudes, and practical steps to put those choices into action.
If you struggle to control your emotions regularly or just on occasion, this is a truly great book with advice that can move right off the page and into your daily life. Pick up a copy and give it a try. I'm pretty certain you'll be glad you did!
