I was searching on amazon for Christian-based self-help books on depression and came across this one. Because amazon lets us do a "search" through the book, I knew immediately it was for me. I had it on pre-order before it was even released!
I was looking for an uncomplicated, Christ-based plan to help deal with depression. These are the seven steps the book presents that I am following:
1. Describe the situation
2. Identify Your Feelings
3. Uncover the Unhelpful self-talk
4. Predict the Behavior
5. Choose Helpful self-talk
6. Select the feelings
7. and again, Predict the behavior
The book, of course, coaches you in your walk through the steps. The book is written in a very friendly, easy-to-understand manner. There is no textbook garble or psychobabble or any "talking down" to the reader, which yes, unbelievably I have seen in books on depression. One of the chapters, which I have never seen in any of the other Christian-based books I've looked through, deals with building friendships with others. Since depression is so isolating, that chapter alone convinced me I needed this book.
IMHO any counseling/self-help that is not Christ-based is not worth the effort. I tried "positive psychology" for a while, but honestly, if you are a Christian and that positive psychology is not Christ-based, it will not take you very far. I have found that just following Christ alone is aid to alleviating depression, and this book takes it a step further with concrete biblically based tools that actively deconstruct our wrong thinking.
A big thank you to the author for giving us this book
I chose to read this book because I have been dealing with a situation that often leaves me suffering from several of the issues discussed in this book. Although while reading, I was a bit overwhelmed at all the steps and how much journaling it takes to deal with one emotion. At times I found myself wondering if I will be able to stick with it or if I will give up in defeat, because it takes more time than I have to devote to all the journaling and self- talk. At this point only time will tell. However, since reading this book, when I am faced with a situation I find myself referring back to see how "they" handled it and start my self-talk and journaling from that point. Hopefully it will come easier as I become more familiar with the steps.
If you are dealing with any of these emotions in your life, I would recommend this book, but be prepared to devote lots of time to it.
