A wonderful story by one of the best writers of romance to be found.
Okay, I'll admit that I am a sucker for a couple of different things in books: the friends to lovers trope and I love a good snowstorm. This book had both and they were done really well. Kyle and Evan have been friends since high school. They're from Ohio, but moved out to LA a little over 10 years ago...as friends. Shortly after they moved there, Evan became involved with the guy he thought he would be with forever...and they were together for ten years before the boyfriend broke up with him unexpectedly six months ago. For those six months, Evan has been living with Kyle.
Kyle is not a boyfriend kind of guy. He does the hook-up thing...a LOT, but it never goes anywhere from there. These two guys almost hooked up when they were moving to LA, but Kyle stopped it in a panic. He's not a relationship guy and didn't want to lose his best friend. But now he's been living with that same best friend for the last six months and his resolve is shattering. He wants Evan as much as he wants his next breath.
Evan wants Kyle too so he comes up with a plan. They always go home to Ohio for the holidays. He's booked them tickets on a sleeper train for that trip home...several days on a romantic train, at Christmastime, in close quarters. It's the perfect romantic set-up...and it works.
I liked this book. These guys love each other before they are actually aware that they are in love with each other. Neither one would ever do anything to hurt the other or their relationship, which is obviously the source of fear for this new relationship. Evan doesn't trust Kyle to stick and Kyle isn't sure that he can trust himself to do so either. But as they travel along, the pull toward each other becomes too much to resist especially after Evan has a way-too-close of a brush with death.
The setting...a train at Christmastime. Honestly, you couldn't ask for a better romantic set-up. I loved this aspect of the story. I also really loved the details. Both of these guys are writers: Kyle's a best-selling novelist while Evan is a struggling screenplay writer. And they both work on their projects throughout the trip. As someone who always has a notebook somewhere on me, I loved that they were constantly jotting down ideas for their writing. There's also a bit of a mystery involving a journal which Kyle receives from his deceased grandfather right before they make their journey. I got caught up in that story line too.
All in all, it was just a really great read. I enjoyed it!
