From School Library Journal
Children will be drawn in by VanDerZee's struggles, inspirations, and achievements as well as the idea that photographs can be both works of art and enduring historical records and that they can be taken by devices other than phones. Backmatter includes an afterword, a bibliography, and a selection of VanDerZee's photographs. A fascinating look at the development of early photography, the life of an African-American artist, and the world of the Harlem Renaissance. ----Kirkus Reviews
Through photography, VanDerZee was able to create a nuanced depiction of life in Harlem in the 20th century. The attractive illustrations, acrylic on canvas, skillfully convey the expressions and sentiments of the images that inspired them, with some original photographs included in the afterword. VERDICT Vivid visuals and comprehensive text combine for an excellent resource for biography collections. ----School Library Journal

Keith Mallett’s illustrations took me back in time and pulled me in as the story unfolded. Each page was stunning but my absolute favorite was the depiction of James VanDerZee’s Harlem on My Mind Exhibit in New York. I love the contrast. The people were in color and the 40 years of Harlem’s history is portrayed through black and white photos. It surely is a sight to see.
I wholeheartedly enjoyed this story and was equally intrigued by the afterword that included a gallery of some of James VanDerZee’s work; my favorite piece being “Future Expectations” (1926) where he used a photomontage technique to depict both the present and the future in one photograph. Absolutely amazing! Hurry up and grab your copy of this Lee & Low Books New Voices award winning book.
