I was so excited after reading the first book in the series (Stillness) that I immediately ordered the next book in the series, (Taken) I enjoyed this book as well, until I realized that the dual storyline which abruptly dropped one of the stories at the end was just a ploy to get me to buy the third book. I had intended to buy the third book anyway. I do not like to be manipulated and refuse to buy the third book as a result.

Taken - A thriller

Taken is book 2 of three! I have not read book 1, but it was not needed to follow this story. There were two investigations, a serial killer and a plot to undermine the CDC. It was kind of hard to follow a lot of the medical language about hiv/aids, but when I got pass it, the plots became very consuming. The characters were all well developed. There are relationships between FBI agents, scientists at the CDC and police detectives. The author showed how these professions can destroy a relation. You see how money and power can influence our medical institutions and how murder can easily be used to control the desired outcome. All this happens while a serial killer is focused on one of the medical staff. When you think the good guys have won, the killer strikes again. The answers can only be found in the next book. I volunteered to review this ARC copy with the promise of a honest review and I recommend that you read this series.

I did not like the ending

Taken is a very well written thriller. I didn't know it was part of a series and all throughout the book till the very end I'd say it was a stand-a-lone. The characters are very well developed and each are unique and different in their own way. Many have secrets they don't want out in the open. The plot is also well developed with some twists and turns along the way as well as some surprises.

The tension builds throughout leaves the reader on the edge of his/her seat turning pages as fast as they can be read.

That being said, I did not like the ending. I totally understand Farrell was leading us into the next book of the series BUT I don't usually sit and read one right after another in a series. I do read books in series but I like them each to have a conclusion not a major cliffhanger at the end or at least all prominent story lines are brought to an end. Taken has so many questions I wasn't happy with the ending. That is the reason for my 4 star rating rather than a 5.

This was a superb book. The whole way through I was left wondering how the two different investigations overlapped. So far, it seems as though they don't. I also enjoyed the science...very well written. The dialogue was written such that you could actually hear the voices.
My biggest criticism is that this was not a stand alone book. It is a serial not a series. There is a difference. Otherwise, I highly recommend this book.

Exciting until the end

Great story plot. I didn't like the ending...leaving the reader hanging. The only other part I did not like was detective Lester. One would think an educated man wouldn't use ya'll in every sentence. It takes away from the intelligence of the reader, otherwise a good story

Part of a series but it can be a stand alone too. Well written. Very detailed on the violence. A bit too detailed about the AIDS controversy for my taste. I'm not a medical person. Overall I liked the book and will read the 3rd in the series too. If only to find out the ending.
