What I liked/Didn’t Like: Very interesting tale of second chances and music. Loved this book.
Not what I thought it was going to be - 4 stars
This book is about Nicola and Austin, who is best friend's with Nicola's brother. Nicola has been obsessed with Austin since she was a teenager. Living in a small tourist town on the East Coast makes for a very simple and somewhat boring life, but Nicola never wanted to leave home and strike out on her own because she was so hung up on Austin and didn't want to leave him behind. Austin has spent the last decade in the same job, bartending, but secretly working on music. He is almost at the point where he is ready to try and get his music out there, he just needs a little help from his friend.
When Nicola accidentally finds his CD she ends up writing a story about him and his music and uploads some of his music to the internet, to get his music out there as a friend. When she disappears on him without a trace, Austin takes it hard, but moves on with his music. The storyline is very well flushed out, but the ending (while giving you a HEA) leaves you with a WTF feeling - almost like it was an afterthought!

Well, I feel bad leaving this review…I love to read and often find that most ARC’s are enjoyable. This is hard to do but as it is, I didn’t love this book…however, it isn’t all bad. The meat is there (no pun intentional here). They just needed a bit of tenderizing. I was totally into the book and going along with the story (very few errors in editing – really just two that I saw, so not bad at all) but then about 80% in, the story took a huge jump and I thought I was missing part of the narrative/story line. All of a sudden the book came to an abrupt end without filling in a bunch of gaps.
I liked the Nicola and even grudgingly Austin after some development. And I appreciated how Nicola stood her ground after the decision was made. Austin was developed enough to give me a good picture of him and character that I did like him. Again, just wish there as more. I hated Nicola’s brother just because of what I read – sounds like there is a book in the waiting about this character because not enough was given to make him understandable for his behavior.
Now, after I say that, what Holly Jaymes has is a good storyline with what appears to be a quick ending due to a deadline being met. Months of the story went by without much detail. And the ending…well, I feel like I went through a time-loop and came out at the end abruptly. I would suggest she retool the ending at the VERY least and re-release. This was a short book but it just needed a bit more editing and revising to make sure that it flowed all the way through to the end. It has good promise and maybe she intended it to be this way for a sequel to explain the gaps. But I despise that kind of writing…Ms. Jaymes is a good descriptive writer, don’t get me wrong. I would just suggest that the gaps be a bit more developed because I feel like it left off for a sequel to come and additional character books in a series. Promote that if that is what it is.
This was a good book, especially for someone who likes bad boy romances. The characters were developed. This is a book for people who love second chances, and a little bit of trouble of some kind getting the romance going or staying between the characters. This is not a book for someone who likes a smooth sailing romance.
