One for you to make notes in the margins, highlight certain passages in a glaring color so they are easy for you to find again and again, and of course, the ever popular ‘dog eared’ creased page! As for the second book, well, it’s the one you pass on to someone that you know needs to read it. Especially since you keep quoting it and telling people about this ‘great book I’m reading.’ When the book starts off introducing you to Felipe Moreno, Deputy Director of Public Works - City of Phoenix (think garbage and recycling), you know there has been a lot of research that has gone into it. This may sound corny, but this book inspires your sense of hope as you read about the ingenuity, creativity, and sheer scrappiness of these ‘Rebuilders’ as you learn about the really tough problems they are facing, solving and all that they are accomplishing. Just as a heads up, when you give that second book away, you’re going to wish you had another copy, since you just remembered someone else who would really enjoy it. That said, if you run into Paul Shoemaker, be sure to thank him for taking the time to introduce us to these great people and to educate us on how to look at the future with a different perspective and with a generosity mindset. As for me, well, I’ve purchased two and gifted both - now time to order a few more.

Especially Part III, when you hit the brass tacks: The author lays out his “five vital traits” for leadership in the 2020s and shares examples in living form—stories from some of the most successful change agents active today and what made them so successful. If you’re trying to create change on some social issue or civic cause, or even in a regular for-profit business setting, this book needs to be in your toolbox. It’s a fast read, too. The leadership stories of individual “Rebuilders” pull you along at a quick pace. Every few pages I was finding something of value, some inspiring quote or concept, or something that on the surface maybe seemed simple but really offered great depth and insight. The book is structured in a way that easily ties the traits together into a cohesive whole—showing why the attributes matter more now than ever. In fact, why these traits are essential to unlocking the mess we’ve gotten ourselves into in this country. The book is not political. It’s not polemic. It’s practical. The real gold is the stories, though. They shine. Don’t miss this one.
