"Filled with intriguing twists and characters and an overarching mystery that will keep fans coming back."--"Kirkus Reviews"
As a forensic sculptor, Eve Duncan's mission is to bring closure to the families whose loved ones have vanished. She knows their anguish--her own beloved daughter, Bonnie, was taken from her when Bonnie was just seven years old. It is only recently that this mystery was resolved and Eve could begin her journey to peace. Now Jim Doane wants the same kind of answers that Eve always longed for. His twenty-five-year-old son may or may not be dead, and he has only burned skull fragments as possible evidence. But he cannot go to the police for answers without exposing his dark past, so instead he chooses a bold step to find the truth--one that takes Eve down a twisted path of madness and evil and into the darkest heart of her own history. In this thriller from bestselling author Iris Johansen, Doane needs Eve's skills and he'll do anything to get them...even if it means "taking Eve."

The dog lives! I wasn’t happy that the dog was poisoned, but the dog lives. That’s the most important thing to this dog lover. It’s the beginning of this thriller that involves Eve, Jane, and Joe in an international mystery that started with the death of a monster named Kevin Doane. First, Jane’s dog, then Jane, herself, then Eve. All are put in jeopardy. The book ends ona cliffhanger involving Eve.
With her uncanny way of making characters come alive, not hiding their flaws, Ms. Johansen pens a tale full of emotion and horror. Her sense of pacing and changing scene at just the right time gives this book a pull that keeps the reader up at night to see what happens next. Johansen is one of the authors who keep me coming back for more. It’s a good thing I came upon the trilogy after all three books were written because I’d be quite frustrated if I had to wait for the next book!
I highly recommend you get your hands on any of the books by this author, but it is best if you read them in order. However, most of her books can be read individually with the main story self-contained.
This book has all the elements that we've come to expect from the Eve Duncan books... Eve is the same driven, talented forensic sculptor with a penchant for finding herself in dangerous situations. Joe is still the loving, protective husband who will move heaven and earth to help his wife, even if it means breaking the rules that he's sworn to uphold. Jane is the adopted daughter who is still trying to learn how to trust others, and thankfully, even Bonnie's "ghost" makes a return appearance. Old rivalries/friendships are tested with people like Venable and Caleb reappearing in this book, and we even see Toby (the wolf/golden retriever hybrid) and the dogs of summer make a cameo appearance.
The only downside to this book is that we now have to wait for the sequel to finish the incredible cliff-hanger roller-coaster ride!!! I love that there are still secrets that we haven't discovered about Eve Duncan...and that she continues to be a strong female who, strengthened by the love of and for her family, has the strength and courage to face anything! This book also made me fondly remember Toby and the dogs of summer, who I'm sure we'll read more about in future books.
Fans of Johansen and her Eve Duncan series will not be disappointed. People new to this author and "Eve Duncan" books will find that this CAN work as a first book, but will find themselves wanting to read the previous books to learn more about the backstory of the characters, especially Bonnie.
WARNING: THIS BOOK ENDS WITH A CLIFF-HANGER... if you don't like waiting for sequels, you may want to read this book closer to the late July release date for "Hunting Eve".

One of my pet peeve is that the story is not finished and all readers will have to wait until the next one comes out to find the end. I guess I should have realized that this story was a trilogy.
In a nutshell, good reading with nice touch of spiritual and a very good sense of suspense.
