Editorial Reviews

Good original music for two cellos is quite rare to find and over the years arrangements have greatly enriched the classical repertoire. In this recording internationally celebrated cellist Julian Lloyd Webber has taken music from Monteverdi to Arvo Part - much of it originally written for two voices - and adapted it to the medium of two cellos and accompanying piano, sometimes including other instrumentation. These unique arrangements, which he performs with his wife Jiaxin Lloyd Webber, allow their cello voices to blend together as they explore music of lyricism, quiet melancholy and tuneful energy.

They say the cello is the closest instrument to the human voice and it does show in this beautiful collection of 21 arrangements for two cellos and piano/harp (well, four cellos in the case of the Holst piece).
From Monteverdi's haunting "Interrotte Speranze" to the soothing "Estonian Lullaby" by Arvo Part, Julian Lloyd Webber and his wife Jiaxin take us onto a fantastic journey through more than 500 years of gorgeous music, including Purcell, Schumann, Dvorak, Saint-Saens, Shostakovich, Rachmaninov, just to mention a few.
I love the Piazzolla and Hahn's pieces (they alone are worth the price of the CD!).
The Ave Maria by Saint-Saens was a very nice change to the more often played Ave Maria by Bach, Gounod, Caccini and Schubert, very nice indeed.
Moon Silver, by Julian Lloyd webber's father Willian Lloyd Webber, also deserves a mention. I heard Julian play live in concert "In the Half Light", also by his father, and I am starting to really like his works.
What impressed me about this CD is that the music flows, Julian and his wife Jiaxin make the playing appear so effortless and totally natural, just like the photo on the cover.
Lovely to see BBC Young Musician of the Year 2012 Laura van der Heijden appear in the Holst piece, well done, a great achievement for such a young cellist! Thumbs up for all the other supportive artists too, Catrin Finch, Guy Johnston and John Lenehan.
Highly recommended, ordering a spare copy for the car now while it stays at this price! :)

Julian Lloyd Webber is a wonderful cellist, and this recording is candy for the cello lover's ears. The brief section of the liner notes written by Mr. Webber refer to his previous Naxos recording of works by Delius and various Irish composers, and he reflects that he and his wife (cellist Jiaxin Lloyd Webber) really enjoyed making quality music together. However, the quantity of appealing music for two cellos was very slim, so the idea to arrange other works for two cellos was born and this recording is the result.

The disc features works originally written by Purcell, Schumann, Rachmaninov, Saint-Seans, Dvorak, Piazzola, Monteverdi, Shostakovich, Holst, Pergolesi, Rubenstein, Nevin, Barnby, Quilter, Arvo Part, and others. Each of these works is sweetly performed Mr. Webber, and his very talented friends (John Lenehan - piano, Guy Johnston and Laura van der Heijden - cello, and Catrin Finch - harp), and his wife. Particularly enjoyable are Piazzolla's "The Little Beggar Boy", Monteverdi's "Interrotte speranze", Rubenstein's "The Angel", and Dvorak's "Autumn Lament", but I find no fault with any of the works on this recording. They are all wonderful pieces in their original form, and the arrangements here are just simply beautiful.

This is perfect music for a rainy day or a quiet afternoon. I very much enjoyed listening to this recording. Delightfully recommended!
