The book's value is that it has lots of ideas for how to find and assess talent. Buried in the book are many gems but you have to look for them amongst all the other less valuable material. What Cowen and Gross do wrong is try to write "the" book on talent as though the topic lends itself to this approach. It does not. Talent, like leadership, is a topic filled with context and the sheer number of variables makes a definitive work impossible. Because of this, a great deal of the book was a waste of time while it clarified, contextualized and rambled without producing clear ideas.

My copy (hardback St. Martin's Press) is very cheaply made with poor paper quality and print that is hard to read. The eye strain was annoying.

TALENT by Tyler Cowen and Daniel Gross is like no other business book I've ever read: funny, creative, adept with the toughest problems leaders and organizations face in attracting, building, and supporting the best individuals for their enterprise. Their hard-won expertise is deep, broad, and draws in the best, the brights, most aware leaders to comment on what they've done, both what's worked and what has not. Early in the book, the authors encourage us to look at the entire world through the lens of talent, not simply assigning it a box in the sphere of work. As writer, as creative marketer, and student of business, I applaud this result of a fascinating, complex partnership of deep thinkers and eminently practical men. I received an advance copy of this book and these opinions are my own unbiased thoughts.

Great book for those seeking a new job or searching for talent!

I wasn't sure what to expect from this book but found some very useful insights and suggestions on how to assess talent for hiring. Although its subtitle is "How to Identify Energizers, Creatives and Winners Around the World" there are sample interview questions and techniques that could work for roles beyond the C-suite. I particularly appreciated the chapters on being open to hiring people with disabilities and understanding how our personal biases get in the way when we are interviewing and selecting people with disabilities, women and people of color. These chapters were worth their weight in gold since so little is written about awareness of our own preconceived notions. I also appreciated their deep analysis of using personality profiles (five factor analysis and others) and the strengths and barriers to using this information in interviewing and selection. This is a good book for those who are interviewing for a job themselves or for leaders searching for great talent for their organizations.

Daniel Gross is a venture capitalist I haven't paid much attention to, but Tyler Cowen definitely has a national profile. I'm always eager to read what he has to say, even if I don't agree. I disagree heartily with a lot of the conclusions and perspectives they take on certain things, but overall I thought it was worth the time to read their book.

I bought this book because it is shortlisted for The Financial Times book of the year. I was never disappointed with any books which were shortlisted by The Financial Times.
This book is just a waste of time. All basic info perhaps useful for someone who has never participated in a recruitment process or interacted with people at workplace. Could have been printed on half the amount of pages - not sure why they used such a large fonts

Bought the book as this topic is always on my mind and it was mentioned in the FT book reviews as well. Having read through the first 40 pages or so it seems like a casual conversation put into a book by the two authors. Not many sources or research is provided, almost no graphics shown. Lacks structure for me and was not convincing at all. Too much anecdotes, too few facts. Disappointing.
