The story picks up with Jana's still being kept in the medical facility where Darak visits her. These visits both are soothing and disrupting as Darak has kept tabs on her recovery. Darak has left Jana with feelings of comfort and pain. Darak lusts after Jana but knows she is not ready for that kind of intimacy. She still has pieces of the blue crystal imbedded in her face and body from the explosion at the end of the battle. Her vague impressions of her life before, fears of what she had become and more questions than answers about was her future, gave her unsettled feelings. Jana being reunited with her sister Jeri was her biggest plus. Everything else left her with question marks. Jana does not know who she is!
Darak had been given the Captaincy of the Circe. The ship was designed to be many things, merchant vessel, spy ship and yes it could wage war when it had to. The crew had very special psi talents and jobs that matched multiple job descriptions. Jana is given a reprieve and a spot on the Circe where she continues to heal, strengthen and find out who she is plus what her psi talents are. Darak and Jana are tested at every turn. But when the order comes down to go Mithrak........
Does Darak really love Jana? Is Jana ready to face what she had done, including going back to Mithrak and the Collective? Can she handle her memories? Can Jana handle Darak?
This is a book of survival, second chances, rediscovery and love. There are some twists and unexpected turns, but characters are deep, well developed and flow from the first book in the series. It can be read as a standalone but is closely tied to what happened in the first book. This helps to follow the storyline.
I love Bianca D’Arc’s books having read all but her dragon series. This follows her Arcana series well. I am impatiently waiting for the next book “Shy Talent”………
