Product Description
Talented Mr. Ripley, The (DVD) After the Oscar-winning The English Patient, writer/director Anthony Min ghella attempted another tricky literary adaptation with The Talented M r. Ripley, which features heartthrob Matt Damon cast against type as a p sychopathic bisexual murderer. Tom Ripley (Damon) is a bright and chari smatic sociopath who makes his way in mid-'50s New York City as a men's room attendant and sometimes pianist, though his real skill is in impers onating other people, forging handwriting, and running second-rate scams . After being mistaken for a Princeton student, Tom meets the shipping tycoon father of Dickie Greenleaf (Jude Law), who has traveled to the co ast of Italy, w here he's living a carefree life with his father's money and his beautiful girlfriend, Marge (Gwyneth Paltrow). Dickie's father will pay Ripley 1,000 dollars plus his expenses if he can persuade Dick ie to return to America. As Ripley and Dickie become friends, Tom finds himself both attracted to Dickie and envious of his life of pleasure. I n time, he decides that he would rather be Dickie Gree nleaf than Tom Ri pley, so rather than go back to his life of poverty, Ripley impulsively murders Dickie and assumes his identity. Th e Talented Mr. Ripley was ba sed on the first of a series of novels featuring Tom Ripley written by P atricia Highsmith; the story was previously filmed in 1960 as Purple No on, with Alain Delon as Ripley.

The first thing that stood out was that it was about the rich and poor. Working class Matt Damon is sent to Italy to find a rich kid Jude Law and bring him back to his father in New York. When Damon arrives he’s caught up in the leisure life of Law. He does anything he wants and Damon becomes enthralled with being like him. From there however things go in unexpected directions and becomes like an Alfred Hitchcock thriller.
Damon really stands out for his performance. He is a complete chameleon. There’s a great line he says about how he thought it would be better to be a fake somebody than a real nobody. The ending is also of Damon sitting in a room while his reflection is shown across different mirrors symbolic of the split personas that he’s created. It’s amazing what his character is able to do and get away with.
They were all very impressed, so I gave them an A for my class (Physiology). Most were probably lying but, if that's the case, they did a better acting job than Matt Damon.
I have watched this movie many times since it came out and will continue to do that. The only weak point of the movie - one that becomes more glaring every time I watch it - is that Mr Damon's portrayal of the main character becomes less believable, more and more stilted.
Just imagine what a Ralph Fiennes could have done with that role.
Still love the movie though.
This film is intelligent in that the plot has a memorable amount of originality to it - but perhaps it is Anthony Minghella we can thank for this distinction. When comparing this film to the book it is based off of, the most common complaints are in regards to information that is left out due to a possible time constraint. Over the course of the film we never find out much about Tom's background, and this does result in some amount of frustrating mystery regarding his motives, (possible) internal struggles, and potential apprehensions. In addition to this, some say the characters in the film are “ too likeable”, In that the relationships the characters have with one another in the film are much more passionate and intimate than they are in the book. In conclusion on this note alone: if you insist on film being as close to the novel they are based off of, you might be better off passing up the opportunity to watch this film.
With the ending in mind, every moment of this film is used to build up to what becomes an inevitable conclusion in retrospect. Details that are important to the progression of Tom's character are given the most attention, and this works to keep audience members from being confused or too caught up in characteristics that have no real significance. At the same time, the embedded subtleties add what is much needed drama and keep this film from being disappointingly predictable; Matt Damon's acting alone humanizes the character he portrays, and in many ways he becomes someone we can relate to despite not wanting this to be the case. In between his irresistible smile and charm we must ask ourselves while watching - to what extent is this a fantasy, and at what moment could this become a reality?
As others have mentioned, special attention was taken when picking this movies’ filming location(s); the beauty of Italy is captured delightfully, and the scenery adds a natural amount of enchantment to the overall story at hand for the audience to enjoy.
Out of the ordinary and easy to digest: I would recommend!

Ripley has plans to save up as much money as he can and move to Italy full time so that he can be a part of Dickies life but just as it seems that Ripley has found his place in the world, Dickie reveals his true feelings – he harshly rejects Ripley and states that he finds him ‘boring and creepy’ an enraged Ripley beats Dickie to death and then assumes Dickies identity, Ripley then begins to live double and triple lives which rapidly spiral out of control with increasingly tragic results.
Is Ripley a victim or is he a ruthless monster ? Is Dickie a fun loving playboy or a decadent, sociopathic low life ? Was Dickies father as much to blame for the ensuing carnage as the two main characters ? ‘The talented Mr. Ripley’ puts these questions to the viewer but refuses to answer them itself. Clearly there are no ‘good guys’ in this film, the characters operate on a sliding scale of - unpleasant to truly horrific -. The conclusion that you are required to draw is, who is the worst ?
Despite his often reprehensible actions, Matt Damon’s character is ironically the only one who even comes close to eliciting sympathy, (if not likability) His violent lashing out, seemingly the manifestation of frustrated expectations and social rejection. Ripley is desperate for acceptance and love but he is also a pathological liar and extremely manipulative..
Dickie is everything that Ripley wants to be but isn’t, wealthy, popular and filled with confidence. However, Dickie is also a narcissist, a hedonist and selfish in the extreme, his mercurial behavior makes him a difficult person to be around and a difficult person to get to know. Half way through the film, Ripley appears to have won Dickie over, only for Dickie to coldly and callously push him away.
Then there is Dickies father who funds his son’s extravagant lifestyle, a good business man but a clueless and irresponsible dad who knows all about his sons bad behavior but continues to support and pay for it.
The talented Mr Ripley is an engaging but very bleak experience, it examines the complex human need for acceptance and love as well as the potentially devastating consequences when these things are denied. It’s also a dramatic expostulation on the dangers of lies and how one lie will often lead to another and another until soon a person doesn’t even know who they are. This is certainly one of the better films of the 1990’s, just don’t expect warm and fuzzy feelings!
The tale of the young and deceitful conman and impersonator Mr Ripley is full of suspense and kept me on the edge of my seat throughout. And that even though I knew how it would end, having seen and being a great fan of the earlier (French) film version "Plein Soleil" from 1960 with Alain Delon as leading man. This is one remake that lives up to the original. For me anyway.
The film is beautifully shot in many glorious Italian locations (Rome, Venice, Naples among others). Really a joy to watch. However, it may not appeal to those who expect an uplifting or inspirational ending. This is a film about a brutal and despicable criminal, albeit a goodlooking and very personably one. Don't expect a Disney ending.
Now a few words about the DVD I bought (I have attached a photo of the cover since reviews for DVDs tend to appear for various different DVD and Blu-Ray editions of the same film which may be of different quality): Picture and sound quality are very good. Language and subtitle options are as listed in the product description. Most importantly: there are optional English subtitles for those who may need them. Also included are a goodly number of extra features:
- Teaser Theatrical Trailer
- Theatrical Trailer
- Inside The Talented Mr. Ripley
- Making of the Soundtrack
- "My Funny Valentine" Music Video
- "Tuo Vu Fa L'Americano" Music Video
- Feature Commentary with Director Anthony Minghella (very nice)

This first episode in Ripley`s sickening rise and rise was written and directed by the late Anthony Minghella, and his cast do him - and Patricia Highsmith, original author and dreamer-up of amoral loners - proud.
Apart from Damon, Jude Law, looking like a young, golden god as Dickie Greenleaf, gives a career-best portrayal of complacent youth far from home, with Gwyneth Paltrow as good as she`s ever been as his long-suffering girlfriend Marge.
Cate Blanchett is brilliant as a hanger-on who pops up at the worst of times, and Philip Seymour Hoffman, in an early role, is stunningly good as Freddie Miles, who smells a rat from his first introduction to the gauche Ripley. PSH ony has a couple of scenes, but he shows that he was a star actor in the making.
Our own Jack Davenport is subtly effective as a friend of Tom`s, their homo-erotic relationship played with touching delicacy.
This is such an entertaining film, too! It looks great, it tells a fascinating story, and its core cast work wonders in quite difficult roles. Minghella is a director we couldn`t afford to lose, so it`s doubly sad he died after only a few rewarding films.
I hope this film sends people to Highsmith`s many excellent novels, not only the Ripley series, but all her others. I think she would have approved of this version of her chameleon-like, ingratiating imp of the perverse, the homicidally talented Mr Ripley.
Memorable, too, was the jazz-club scene where Jude Law sings a duet entitled Tu Vuo'Fa L'Americano and I enjoyed this so much I ended up buying the C.D. of the film music which included this song. I watched the film twice and picked up on plots I missed the first time around, not that it was necessary but you do have to concentrate, otherwise you could miss vital points being made.
This was over 2 hours of absolute intrigue and suspense and I recommend any thriller enthusiast to buy this DVD. You will not be disappointed and will be money well-spent.
