I purchased this set of books after reading the free copy of The Dark Huntsman because I wanted to read more about the MacElvy's and Underhill. The Dark Huntsman is a twisted version of Snow White, Prince by Blood & Bone is a twisted version of Beauty & the Beast, and Broken Mirror is a twisted version of The Frog Prince. These are wonderfully unique stories for adults who haven't outgrown their love for fairy tales, but these fairy tales are definitely for a grown-up audience. I'm currently reading the next book in this series, The Winter Queen's Dragon, which is a twisted version of the Snow Queen fairy tale. I'm looking forward to seeing where Jessica Aspen is going with the character, Aeval, after the ending of The Broken Mirror as well. Great series that's definitely worth checking out...
Ms. Aspen has constructed a complex, rich fantasy world that intersects with the modern real world in a fascinating way. From a catastrophic encounter between a modern gypsy witch and an ancient Elvatian (don't call them Elves - it's an insult!) to a surprising love story between captor and captive, these stories draw on classic fairy tales in delightful and unexpected ways. Touches of humor complement the steamy love scenes amid plots that kept me guessing and turning pages. Ms. Aspen weaves her stories with beautiful, evocative sentences that draw you into her world and beg you to stay.
Whether you read this collection of four books straight through, as I did, or acquire them one at a time as individual stories, if you are a lover of fantasy, you'll enjoy these books.
I give it a 4.5. Kat is a likeable character and doesn't put up with shit. Ryker needs to grow up, does he not know where his loyalties should lie? I'm not sure about her dad, hopefully he'll man up in the next book. I read it in one sitting i liked Kat that much.
