There are other dystopian novels out there and I have found that there is quite a bit that can be done with a post-apocalyptic world. However, author David Wind has come up with one of the most intriguing and original story lines for a book that I have come across in a long time. Part science fiction, part fantasy and part horror, 'Born To Magic' is a futuristic fantasy where the world of Nevaeh jumps off from the first page. The author writes beautifully, using specific vocabulary, without holding back the story line. I thought Areenna, the young heroine, was a well-developed character and fully understanding of the consequences of her actions. I couldn't put it down and read it from beginning to end in one sitting! I stayed up until three in the morning to finish it ;p Excellent writing from an excellent author.
"Uniquely intriguing blend of Shannara and Star Wars perhaps?" Sheila Deeth VINE VOICE
Born to Magic presents a very different world from our own, where magic has a logic given to women, and a pre-industrial America has well-defined rules and laws governing kingdoms, kings and queens. But it wasn't always so. These kingdoms warred incessantly before the new leader arrived and changed everything. Of course, the reader asks what happened before that - how did America become a land of kingdoms? And for this, the author presents intriguing hints that provide enough information without ever giving too much.
Author David Wind presents a fascinating future history very naturally in this tale, blending magic and science with touches of sociology and present day danger. He pulls the reader in with well-timed mystery and revelation, amuses with nicely futuristic words and idioms, and adds a fascinating dual sense of dangers past and present.
As the first book in the series, Born to Magic introduces an captivating culture, peopled with enjoyable characters. The magical Areena and the man she might learn to love make convincing protagonists that readers easily learn to care about. Hints of Star Wars blend with Shannara perhaps, and the result is nicely individual, futuristic, fascinating, and very well-told. Highly recommended.
VOLUME II: The DARK MASTERS
A brilliant escape from reality... into a brilliantly designed world...
By Pelican Freak (AMAZON TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
"I have killed creatures and men. I have found terrible powers within me and met people and things who should never be but are."
When I stumbled upon this quote, deep into this epic read, I felt that it summarized a bit of Areenna's journey but might also serve to intrigue anyone who reads it and hasn't yet read this book... I share it here because it just jumped out at me as so... fitting.
I'm not usually a reader of epic journeys, fantasy or sci-fi type reads but this book makes me think maybe I should be.
First of all - it does take place in the future but ... it's not one of these far-fetched futuristic deals. There is a very reasonable explanation for how the state of things came to be this way , including but not exclusively limited to our actual current state of affairs with the religious war / terrorism situation that we unfortunately seem to have going on.
There is a journey involved and without posting any spoilers - it is as much about discovering oneself as it is the main characters carrying out their task to save their people.
I become so lost in this world - I still miss it, having finished this book a few weeks ago. It stayed with me more than most. Some books you just want to devour while others devour you... this one definitely devoured me for the duration - I cannot say enough.
If you're looking for a brief escape, it's right here.
Better than the first

David Wind's The Dark Masters is the second in his Tales of Neveah series. Like _Born to Magic, The Dark Masters follows the journey of Areena and Mikaal, two young royals whose land is under magical attack from a dark sorceress. As both grow in their abilities and use of their magic, they continue to deepen the bound between themselves while finding that Neveah's history is even more complicated than they previously thought.
Volume III: TRINITY
Trinity - Battle for Nevaeh - Five Star, Action Packed and Full of Surprises!,
By Teresa E. Davis
In this third book of the Nevaeh series, hundreds of thousands of ghazi are headed to Nevaeh and indeed are already invading Nevaeh under the command of the Dark Masters in addition to the Black Witch. The outcome rests on Areenna and Mikaal, however, they are not entirely alone in this fight. Surprises abound in this book, coming in every way you wouldn't expect! I could not put the book down. As usual, David Wind pulls the reader in and there is no putting this book down. I read the entire novel on a plane trip! Areenna and Mikaal return to the Island and what awaits them there is so unexpected to the reader; revealing to the story of Navaeh - such a surprise!
The Prelude to Nevaeh, also available on Amazon, is a must read for this series. Roth Solomon's background is as intriguing as the rest of the book and leaves the reader begging for more!
