Tales from Shakespeare is an English children's book written by brother and sister Charles and Mary Lamb in 1807.
The book is designed to make the stories of Shakespeare's plays familiar to the young. Mary Lamb was responsible for the comedies, while Charles wrote the tragedies; they wrote the preface between them.
The following Tales are meant to be submitted to the young reader as an introduction to the study of Shakespeare, for which purpose his words are used whenever it seemed possible to bring them in; and in whatever has been added to give them the regular form of a connected story, diligent are has been taken to select such words as might least interrupt the effect of the beautiful English tongue in which he wrote: therefore, words introduced into our language since his time have been as far as possible avoided.

Review
Conquering the distaste for knowledge and learning which so frequently opposes itself to the instruction of children; and we do not scruple to say that, unless perhaps we except Robinson Crusoe, these volumes claim the very first place, and stand unique, without rival or competitor.
-- "Critical Review, 1807"The Lambs' Tales is the granddaddy of all Cliff Notes and may be the only one that qualifies in its own right as a work of literature. These narrative retellings of 18 of Shakespeare's plays don't attempt to reproduce the plays' structure or dramatic qualities, but recast the stories into narrative form with freedom and dexterity.

About the Author
Siblings CHARLES AND MARY LAMB were luminaries of early nineteenth-century literary life and key figures in the Romantic movement. Their well-known Tales from Shakespeare, first published in 1807 and never out of print, was written to encourage the poetic impulse in children and prepare them to enjoy the actual plays later in life. --This text refers to an alternate kindle_edition edition.

The book is an older copy but it was in great shape. FLAWLESS. And, most importantly,
it arrived in time for the birthday party.
Superb service!

Yes, the book might have been originally aimed at children who lived in 1807, but it still can be used today by all ages as a useful overview of 20 of the Bard's plays. As you might expect, the language is a little archaic but it does a good job of giving background on the major characters and their role in the play, whilst more or less keeping the prose as simplistic enough as a fairy tale. It even includes some of the original speech which, when placed in prose context, seems much less cryptic than when first read in play form. If only I'd bought this book when I studied A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Tempest and Hamlet! I will definitely, if I get the chance, recommend it to my classmates.
What else can I say? I good, useful book that should well belong on everyone's bookcases as a point of reference. Well done Mr and Mrs Lamb!

The version I received was a large illustrated hardback version, making it rather more children friendly than the regular paperback. This book is essential because it is a perfect introduction to Shakespeare's plays. The author condenses a selection of the more accessible works into short stories. Intended for kids of the victorian era when it was written, the Dickensian style helps to conjure an authentic style and atmosphere, while retaining the spirit and meaning of the bard's original texts.
