Tales from Shakespeare is an English children's book written by brother and sister Charles and Mary Lamb in 1807.

The book is designed to make the stories of Shakespeare's plays familiar to the young. Mary Lamb was responsible for the comedies, while Charles wrote the tragedies; they wrote the preface between them.

The following Tales are meant to be submitted to the young reader as an introduction to the study of Shakespeare, for which purpose his words are used whenever it seemed possible to bring them in; and in whatever has been added to give them the regular form of a connected story, diligent are has been taken to select such words as might least interrupt the effect of the beautiful English tongue in which he wrote: therefore, words introduced into our language since his time have been as far as possible avoided.

About the Author

WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE (1564-1616), English poet and dramatist of the Elizabethan and early Jacobean period, is the most widely known author in all of English literature, often considered to be the greatest. He was an active member of a theater company for at least twenty years, during which he wrote many great plays. Plays were not prized as literature at the time, and Shakespeare was not widely read until the middle of the eighteenth century, when a great upsurge of interest in his works began which continues today.

Siblings CHARLES AND MARY LAMB were luminaries of early nineteenth-century literary life and key figures in the Romantic movement. Their well-known Tales from Shakespeare, first published in 1807 and never out of print, was written to encourage the poetic impulse in children and prepare them to enjoy the actual plays later in life. --This text refers to an alternate kindle_edition edition.

Mary Lamb writes in a prosy, lecturing style. The book was put together so that young ladies in the regency era could read the stories from Shakespeare without being shocked by the language and strong scenes. Old Will wasn't thinking about delicate Regency sensibilities, he had his eye on the till so his plays were sensational in his day. The plots of the Shakespeare plays are more or less faithfully rendered, but if you want to learn about Shakespeare without reading his work, Cliff's notes are a better choice.

These pages are extremely hard to read because the font is really small, maybe 8 point, with not much white space on the page. It seems they were trying to fit as much as they could on each page in order to save paper. I haven't begun trying to read it yet, but it is seems it will be an unpleasant experience due to the difficulty keeping concentration on the small print. I may just return it.

My very young friend celebrates his birthday with William Shakespeare. I thought it would be a great way to introduce him to Shakespeare's stories by giving him a copy of the Lamb "Tales." His mother and father can read the stories to him and when he's older, I hope he'll pick up the plays and read them himself.

The book is an older copy but it was in great shape. FLAWLESS. And, most importantly,
it arrived in time for the birthday party.

The Lambs' classic book is an ideal read-aloud text and a perfect introduction to Shakespeare for young readers and listeners. We've found it suitable for our older children especially -- ages 7 and up. Each "tale" takes around fifteen minutes to read, and although some of the vocabulary is rather elevated, vocal inflection and emphasis can aid comprehension. The Lambs have done a commendable job of capturing the drama of each of Shakespeare's plays in a 10-12 page narrative format. Highly recommended.

There are various editions of this book available, but this is the one I remember from my younger years - for the illustrations as well as the stories. My copy went missing in a house move, so I had to re-buy it - not a book to be without. Converts Shakespeare's scripts into proper prose tales. Highly recommended - and not just for children.

As an A level English student soon to begin studying Othello in depth, I decided to buy this book as a way of introducing myself to the plot of the play and the characters. Although I have not read any of the other stories yet, if the Lambs' retelling of The Moor of Venice is anything to go by it was worth spending 85p on a used copy!

Yes, the book might have been originally aimed at children who lived in 1807, but it still can be used today by all ages as a useful overview of 20 of the Bard's plays. As you might expect, the language is a little archaic but it does a good job of giving background on the major characters and their role in the play, whilst more or less keeping the prose as simplistic enough as a fairy tale. It even includes some of the original speech which, when placed in prose context, seems much less cryptic than when first read in play form. If only I'd bought this book when I studied A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Tempest and Hamlet! I will definitely, if I get the chance, recommend it to my classmates.

What else can I say? I good, useful book that should well belong on everyone's bookcases as a point of reference. Well done Mr and Mrs Lamb!

Any student or lover of Shakespeare will enjoy this book. Each tale is the background to the plays Shakespeare wrote. The authors are brother and sister - Charles and Mary Lamb. I gave this book to my great niece and I am still expecting feedback from her. But I read the book years ago, my book had very few illustrations, however I still loved it, since then I studied many of Shakespeare's plays and been present at some of them. I am biased, perhaps the only fault is the quality of the paper - it seems very flimsy, but the illustrations are good although I expected more of them.
