If you want to learn what being a "gringa" and living in Mexico is really like, you must read this book! Jenny McGill's fascinating account of her life with her husband, Howard, "Tales from the Sierra Madre" chronicles their adventures as they live and interact with the village townspeople of Talpa, a remote community in the mountains above the resort town of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. The stories are charming and reveal Jenny's love for the Mexican culture and the lives of its citizens. Hers is a very special perspective, some of it gained as she worked as the US Consular Representative in Puerto Vallarta for over fourteen years. But, mostly this is a love story about two people who chose to live as ex-pats for most of their lives in a place where the activity of living is much slower and, sometimes, time almost stands still.

This was the second book that I read written by Jenny McGill. I enjoyed her first book, but this one was more personal and took the reader right along with her to meet her neighbors and know the area. It was also fun to get the receipes mentioned in the book. Must admit tears ran down my face while reading of the reunion in Talpa that Jenny orchestrated before her death. A charming and moving book written by a charming and caring woman. I highly recomend it to others. Hope it gets to Kindle.

I learned of this book shortly after I made my first visit to Talpa. I wish I had read it beforehand, though, because I would have arrived with a lot more background info than I possessed. Nevertheless, "Tales" is not intended as a guidebook. It's much better than that. It contains the reminiscences of a woman who lived in Talpa for many years and knew whereof she wrote. You can find plenty of Talpa travel info online, but you won't read about an almost-forgotten grave, won't know who donates the Virgin's hair every year, and you won't get a belly laugh over mishaps with deviled eggs. (However, you won't get a tear in your eye at the end, either.) I did not have the good fortune to meet Jenny McGill, but her personality and humor come through vividly in her writing. I feel I caught just a glimpse of what she was like. To you, if not wanting to put it down is an indicator of a good book, then you're going to enjoy "Tales from the Sierra Madres." (I had to slow down and read only a few pages a day.) One other bonus about this book: the authentic recipes. I'm eager to try them all, beginning with the pajaretes!
