The author, Steve Vernon, writes tremendous prose. His sentences are works of art. That can be a blessing and a curse. The blessing is they rope the reader in and makes he or she want to read what the author has to say. The curse is that you better have something to say.
While the stories are certainly not bad, the telling of them falls flat in many instances because the author dazzles us with his command of words, but mostly doesn’t take us anywhere with them.
Hemingway famously said that every scene should do two of three things: express theme, reveal character and/or advance plot. If it doesn’t, the scene goes.
Once the author learns that lesson, he’s going to be a force to be reckoned with.
I try to read all of Steve Vernon's books when I see he has a new one out
He does a great job as a author !
