Editorial Reviews

Stornoway's second album, Tales From Terra Firma, is an album of stories birth, death, marriage, coming of age: The Big Stuff. The songs were mostly written in a camper van in land-locked Oxford but on listening, the yearning for adventure and the freedom of the coast and wild places is palpable. As is true of classic songwriting partnerships, lyricist Brian Briggs eloquence coupled with his crystalline voice unite with Jon Ouin s stunning arrangements and alchemise to form a musical mirror.

Stornoway's second full length CD is a showcase of creative songwriting and lush musicality. The collection is perhaps more studio friendly than its predecessor, but still offers plenty of material for the band's exciting live performances. Stand outs include the melancholy "Farewell to Appalachia," "Invite to Eternity," and Brian Briggs' closing solo number, "November Song."

This is NOT a folk rock band, despite what you may have read. This is a fantastic pop band, one of the best I've ever heard and I go back a long, long way. Top shelf song writing, vocals, arrangements. Virtuoso's at every instrument. Unforgettable songs. Some feel their first album is better. Not. Both albums are a must own.

Not as catchy or memorable as their debut album "beachcombers windowsill", but still carries a lot of the heart and naivety of their first release.

I was really excited for Stornoway's Tales From Terra Firma, as I'm a huge fan of Beachcomber's Windowsill. It wasn't that I was disappointed by this album, but I wasn't overjoyed or ecstatic. However, it's definitely a solid album. I think the first track is fantastic - a great opening. "The Bigger Picture" irks me... like they're trying too hard to sound happy. But it's definitely still worth buying, and I find myself coming back to it over and over again. I just wish the whole thing was more of a great listen, worthy of sitting down and closing your eyes and doing nothing else for the next 48 minutes.

I loved the first album by Stornoway, led by Brian's wonderful voice and musicality. So I've been waiting for a 2nd round. I detect a few changes, and I'm enjoying them. The more I listen, the more I enjoy! Of course, nothing is quite like hearing them live...
