About the Author

C.S. WILSON is a life-long writer and horse-lover. For nine seasons, she indulged her love of horses by working as a wrangler in the Rocky Mountains. Tales from the Trail is her first book. She and her husband, also a writer, have adopted two BLM mustangs and are currently training them to be trail horses. They live with their small menagerie in northern Colorado, with her grown children nearby.

If you have ever wondered what it would be like to be lucky enough to be a trail guide in the breathtaking mountains, THIS is the book you need to read. The author gives you incredible insight into what wrangler life *really* is. She covers everything from guest behavior, (which believe me- at times is THE single most difficult aspect of the job), the horses and their many different personalities and behavior traits and she conveys the feelings of triumph and joy, to sorrow and heart break that come with the territory of working with horses. I had the pleasure of riding these trails with Ms. Wilson as my guide, I met some of the horses she talks of in this book. She brought to life the memories of the horses, the breathtaking scenery, and the sheer joy of our ride together.

I strongly encourage you to go along for the ride in this book. If you have spent any time around horses, or on a guided trail ride, you'll thoroughly enjoy this inside look! And if you have not had the pleasure of a ride in the spectacular mountains, let this book give you a taste of it- and then go ride there.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book from C.S. Wilson as she took you along with her as she started at the beginning of her new adventure as a wrangler and trail guide to the tribute to her beloved horse. She is detailed in her stories and information so you feel as though you are high in the Rocky Mountains right alongside her...perhaps in her trail party. I only wish it were longer as the end of a good book is like saying goodbye to a friend.

I know Wilson, and I know the stories in the book (some first hand), so I may be biased. But I LOVED this book. The stories brought back memories of rides-gone-by in the area, and several of the stories I had never heard in full before, and I was delighted to get more details.

This book is a wonderful look into the workings of the "Guest Relations" side of vacations, particularly in the horseback riding livery part of the vacation industry.

I give it 5 stars only because they don't offer 6, or 10.

C.S. Wilson captures the life as a wrangler in the Colorado mountains with such detail it made me feel like I was on the rides with her. Since chances of me ever actually braving the mountains, the opportunity to take the rides with her was perfect. I loved the way she described the scenery and captured what I can only imagine the beauty to be. Throughout the book, I felt the fear, annoyance, awe, accomplishment, and sadness as she wrote about the different rides, people, and horses she has experienced. And for her to share that epilogue ride with Estes was incredibly special.

C. S. Wilson really catches life with horses. This book brought back many wonderful memories of my own experiences with riding and working with horses. "Tales from the Trail" was such an enjoyable read that I'm ready to sit myself down on the couch under the window and read it again.

Inexperienced riders, wilderness trails and horses are a formula for all kinds of action. Weather, wild animals, and human interaction guarantee an interesting mix. These stories of the hilarious, strange, dangerous, and just plain interesting are well-told and a great read. Well worth the time.

I have ridden at many a commercial rental stable and have often wondered about the wranglers and where the horses come from. This book was a great look into that world. I was disappointed when it ended.

I enjoyed delving into a world outside of my experience and the only wish I had for this book to improve it was to add some photos. The cover photos are nice, but some of her favorite horses would have added to the reading experience in my opinion.
