It’s August 16st 2001 and a hooded man is in a position which none would envy. He can smell the burn, but there’s no escape, no way out. Who he is we are not in a position to know yet. Six weeks earlier DI Colin Strong has been told that he will not be promoted to the rank of DCI as he expected and hoped. It is a disappointment the more because of the fact that a “fast track high-flyer” is appointed instead.
When a body is found in the bathtub of a house, with no signs indicating violence, it seems an obvious suicide. Somewhere else in Wakefield, Belinda is feeling unhappy. Her life with husband Charlie Chamberlain – or Charles as he now insists upon being called – is falling apart when Belinda finds legal documents concerning a property, owned by her husband. Upon investigating further little does Belinda know that she’s unchaining a series of events, leading to a secret society, influential people being involved, culminating in violence, life. Meanwhile journalist Bob Souter gets an anonymous call about a shady developing company: Thistle Developments. Souter has no idea that this call will endanger both him as well as his friends Susan and Sammy e threats and murder.
Follow Bob Souter and his girlfriend Alison, their friends Susan and Sammy and the Wakefield CID team with Colin Strong, Kelly Stainmore and the others into yet another captivating read. David Evans has written a fascinating crime novel and you can see how he felt inspired by his characters – his creations – appearing in the book. Will they all survive? Will there be another detective in ‘The Wakefield Series’ originally set out as a trilogy? There are so many possibilities, characters I'm not ready to give up yet that I would love to see the series expand more!
Bob Souter and DI Colin Strong are back, this time in a curious case of a transsexual found in a bath for over a year....and how could she possibly be connected to a well known lawyer? Both men try and figure out what is going on, in their own ways. I enjoyed getting to know both of them a little better too and it was nice to read about their personal lives a bit more as well.
There are a lot of different threads that connect these two people and it is certainly interesting who knows whom! I had a lot of sympathy for the lawyers wife and I was at the edge of my seat when she was doing a bit of sleuthing of her own.
This is a good novel, keeps you guessing constantly and you will want to keep on reading until you get to the very end. Lots of twists and turns in this one :)
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book. Thank you to the author and Bloodhound books.
A great opening plotline, that leads into so many questions, conundrums and dilemmas for both D.I. Colin Strong, and Bob Souter - head newspaper reporter, their friends and family.
There are various storyline threads running through the novel, tying together superbly at the end, but intriguing all the way through the book.
Which turned out to be an extremely gripping and tense read. Nearer the end of the book I did not want to read on about one particular storyline, and there were some real heart in the mouth tense moments. With emotions running high.
I am unsure if this is set up as a trilogy, or a series. There is plenty more mileage from the point of view of Strong and Souter, where friendship was definitely tested. And I could easily read more.

Top international reviews
All the main characters are totally believable and your endearingly drawn to their different personalities.
There are some heart stopping moments throughout the book, which to my mind was extremely plausible and true to life, to make it a little scary in some respects.
I want more of this series please Mr Evans, more Colin and his team, more Bob and Co
Wonderful and hope there are more in the Wakefield series to come
Looking forward to more from David Evans.
Fast paced and this is it no more to read
Hopefully this is not the end ............
Great interaction between police and journalists with fast paced action to keep the reader looking forward to seeing what the next piece of the puzzle will fall into place.
I fully recommend this series to anyone who likes a good English style cop investigation.
Great story, great characters and excellent plot, thats all that needs to be said.
