Sure, there are a few places where the advice is a bit dated (e.g. what clothes are appropriate for the office), but those parts should be pretty obvious to just about any reader. The advice is still the best and it worked for me when I first read it in the '90's and it's still the best out there. What was surprising to me is how caring and down to earth Barbara Walters really is. She's very reassuring when she points out in various places in the book times when she (one of the top interviewers ever, no less) or some famous person she met felt awkward and how the situation was saved. By the end she's taught you how to actually care about all the people you talk with. This book is a classic.

A friend of mine who runs a podcast recommended this book to me. The examples are dated, but charming. It's a classic book from one of the best.

I think this book was first published in 1972. I gave my first copy to a friend years ago and only recently ordered another one for myself. The advice Barbara offers truly has stood the test of time. It's as relevant now as it was when both Barbara and I were very young.I've never been uncomfortable talking one-on-one with someone I've never met before but she gives such essential, successful guidelines for drawing the other person out, that I can practically guarantee that they'll come away feeling as though they've have a fascinating conversation even though you've barely said a word after you asked a few introductory questions.

This is the best resource I know to learn or teach interviewing skills for therapists, journalists, and anyone else who interviews for a living. I checked this out years ago from the library and it was already out of print. I been a social worker, teacher and therapist for over 30 years and recommend this book to my graduate students in field placement. They have to hunt to find it but they all agree it is well worth it to find this fun and easy to read guide to overcoming your self consciousness, preconceived notions, biases and fears and genuinely get into the moment and situation of the interview.

This book came highly recommended but is just too outdated at this point to be functional. If you are looking for an etiquette book for outdated times this maybe it but if you are looking to talk to folks and possibly learn from them this is not the book.

I bought this hard to find book, because it's by Barbara Walters, the best interviewer of all interviewers. She has successfully interviewed many people who will not give interviews to other interviewers. Her compassion enables her to ask personal questions that people do not want to answer, and she is successful where others are not. Her tips listed in this book will help anyone to learn how to talk to just about anyone, just as the title implies. This book is a used paperback and is not being published any more. It was last printed in 1975 with a listed price of $1.50, but it cost much more than that when I bought it, and it is well worth the present day price.

It is a simple book but effective. It is funny to read the book and hear Barbara's voice. It is also funny to hear the social aspects of the day, that are so different from today. But still, very good.

When I received this book, The cover was completely damaged, and ripped in multiple places. The book still reads but now I'm a little more hesitant giving this as a gift like it was intended

Although it was written so many years ago, and the people Barbara interviewed where well known then and still are. Still applies today when wanting to start a conversation with people you would think you had nothing in common with.

Amusing but a bit dated. Also some advice is not that useful, since the chances for normal people to speak to presidents, sports starts, etc are rather low, but in general the advice is sound.
