From the first notes of the Introitus of Tomas Luis de Victoria's 'Requiem', the listener may find himself lost. This sterling selection of early requiem masses from the Iberian Peninsula also includes masses by Duarte Lobo, Manuel Cardoso, and Alonso Lobo, rich compositions that are designed to sing a soul to eternal rest (or to the glories of Heaven, depending on your personal slant!) Skillfully sung by the Tallis Scholars (who have a shelf all to themselves when it comes to works of this sort) in a church in Hackney, London, and another in Norfolk, and quite deservedly so. Over two hours of deeply emotional listening.

Many years ago I heard Manuel Cardoso's (1566-1650) Requiem, which was my introduction to requiems. That's the reason for purchasing this CD, and I'm thrilled with it. It also includes Victoria's Requiem (1548-1611), and I recommend this CD to anyone interested in early requiems. Beautifully done, a perfect example of the power of music.

I don't understand what is so difficult about distinguishing between disc 1 and disc 2; Gimell seems to frequently have problems with this concept, creating issues for those of us who rip to the library in Windows media player.

Nevertheless, the performers are excellent; would that the publisher would match their level of expertise.
