Of the living handful who did not drink the water, Tamara Hunney, off the streets, and Sam Winterstone, a staunch Christian and impoverished screenwriter living in a trailer park beside a non-poisoned lake in horse-country, chance together and rescue 8 steers and 9 horses and, by looting the local feed and tack stores, ready them for the 1500 mile trek to find her Aunt Tillie in Denver. With feed and water on a wagon, they set off in the last of the summer weeks, and plan to winter halfway. As they travel they discover the Hoover Dam is blown. On the high desert, out of feed and they and their critters near to frostbite, they encounter a friendly town near Prescott, and a sheriff who sends them to winter at a billionaire newspaper publisher John Teal's summer ranch; he's trapped there by the apocalypse with his wives, daughters, and ranch hands. (His adopted Muslim religion allows him four wives.) Determinedly blind to Tamara's lethal street-smarts, he deprives her and Sam of their weapons, holds them prisoner, and believes he's winning her to his perversions and plans to marry her to his brutish son, Lewis. From here the story advances into a desperate chase and fatal conclusion among the Navajo of Arizona.

Well Worth Reading

The French film director, Jean Luc Goddard, was once asked what it takes to write a good screenplay to which he replied, "A Girl and a Gun". This book opens with that and then proceeds to take the reader much further than Goddard might have had in mind. More than just a great yarn, although it reads like that, it's also an unlikely love story that touches on issues about society, morality, religion and hypocrisy. But no book or movie is worth one's time without compelling and sympathetic characters and Lascelles gives us that in spades in both Sam and Tamara, although you may find it hard to believe that possible when we first meet them. But finally what makes it all work is the writing--- Lascelles clarity and visual acuity carries this tale and our 'heroes' along with seemingly little effort and great tenderness making it a joy to read, even (or especially) when the circumstances get a bit rough and gritty. It brings to mind a kind of blend between Cormac McCarthy and Larry McMurtry in terms of form and substance. I strongly recommend this book

Author Kendrew Lascelles has invited us on a modern journey as old as time itself. Sam Winterstone a man of years, having survived a life of excess finds himself on the road with Tamara Hunney a beautiful young girl an uncomfortable number of years his junior. In a future world pessimistically predictable, death becomes all too attractive and almost certain. Sam's faith in God and Tamara's head on approach to adversity will inspire and astound you. By the end of their journey you will know Sam and Tamara Hunney. In fact. You may already know them.

Is it a tale of hope,...or despair?. Find out for yourself as you travel across country with our two unlikely heros, old wise Sam, and a wise beyond her years firecracker, who calls herself Tamara. The unknown lurks around every corner of their quest, in a once secure America, now somehow turned terribly wrong. Mr. Lascelles takes us on a rollercoaster of a ride, to their ultimate destiny. Bravo!

Lascalle is a find... an interesting style and perfect command of wordcraft. After 40 pages, I couldn't put the book down and on finishing, was left with a great deal to think about. I can't wait to read his next book.
