Editorial Reviews

2010 sophomore album from the Avant Black/Death/Doom Metal band. Taming the Cannibals is one of the more cerebral and challenging Death Metal albums to come out this year. Featuring former members of Prog/Gothic art-rockers Kayo Dot and Avant-Death Metalists Biolich, the Boston-based group unleashes extreme chaotic dissonance and pitch-black chthonic textures-a combination of atonal 20th-century classical music and vicious blackened death laced with stretches of intense choral ambience and blasts of calcifying, glacial doom. Ehnahre creates some of the most difficult death metal out there, but balances the relentlessly unpredictable arrangements with seething aggression and crushing riffage.

The title pretty much sums it up. This band takes the template set by Gorguts and takes it to very strange and jarring places. There's no catchy riffage here, no subterranean atmosphere that so many retro death metal bands nowadays like to use; each song is a whirlwind of dissonance, which makes for a torturous listen if you're not in the proper mood. Occasionally, though, they'll slow down their disjointed assualt to a crawl, allowing for their Khanate influences to seep out everywhere. The death vocals are also worth mentioning; they're less of a growl and more of a scream, and sound utterly maniacal. Equally as creepy are the cleans that are utilized, particularly at the end of the second track, in which you can discern the morbid lyrics of a child-sized skeleton smashing against a wall. What the hell is going on here?

If there's one fault aside from the difficulty a person might have listening to this, it's the lack of memorability. As I made apparent: there's very little that resembles death metal, or conventional music in general -- and for some, that might be a hindrance. Basically, if you find Gorguts, Khanate, Portal or Deathspell Omega to be headache-inducing, then you'd best stay away from this.
