The first part of the story is OK even with the silly plot, but then Rose and the Duke start falling in lust and become intimate. Then of course they must regret it when morning brings them back to reality; until the next time they get lusty and go a little further than last time. This behavior seemed very out of character with the "good" Duke and the child-like innocence of Rose. It seemed like it was added to the story because the author felt reader's expected it. I felt like I was reading porn since it seemed so out of character with the tone of the beginning of the story. The rest of the book proceeds as you would expect but the annoying part was the addition of extra characters that had no background or involvement in the story to that point. A best friend shows up that could have used a lot more introduction earlier in the story since she seemed important to the plot, and the same with a boat captain and his wife who were instrumental. Just out of the blue they appear and start giving advice to the lovers. There was no foreshadowing and it really interfered with the flow of the plot.
I sure hope I got this story free because it certainly isn't worth paying money for. I thought I had read other books by this author and liked them, but if I have I've forgotten them. I recognized a couple of covers of the books on her author's page so I must assume they were better than this one. I'll have to be more careful about trusting reviews that imply a story is really good and well written.
It was a sweet, mysterious way that Rose first meet, Alex, the scarred duke. It was charming and a good way to make her more curious. Alex was an honorable man who didn't want to force Rose to marry him, even though he was falling deeper and deeper for her. He wanted her to have a choice. He hoped she chose him.
There were a few things towards the end that didn't make any logical sense but I don't want to say what they are. Not giving any spoilers. There will be a H.E.A. but Rose is going to have to fight for it.
The H felt he wasn't whole because of his scar, but when he was constantly reassured by the h that it didn't bother her, he wouldn't believe it.
The ending where our H friend helps, and the H doesn't accept it for what it is, bothered me too. Anyway, we do get HEA, and an Epilogue one year in the future. No cliffhanger's either.
Very little on the romance front, and we do get mildly described lovemaking. I am not going into the premise, as many have, just what you to expect why reading it. (ljb)
