Product Description

The black 5784 Evolution Messenger 4 Bag from Tamrac is a versatile, slim-profile 600 denier PolyTek with ballistic nylon messenger bag that converts from a camera bag to a briefcase. The bag can carry a D-SLR camera with a lens attached, 2-3 additional lenses (including a 70-200mm f/2.8), and a flash. There are 2 compartments; a foam-padded camera compartment called the "shuttle", which features adjustable, foam-padded dividers and a foam-padded compartment that can hold most laptop computers with a screen up to 15.6". The zippered top opens away from the body for fast access to a camera with a lens attached. Gear can also be accessed by unbuckling and lifting the top flap. To convert the Evolution Messenger 4 to a briefcase, simply remove the shuttle from the bag using the handles. The main compartment can then be filled with files, paperwork, or other business or personal items. To convert it back into a camera bag, just slip the shuttle back in. There is a front zippered pocket that has paraphernalia pockets to organize discs, business cards, a phone or iPod, pens, pencils and other items, a zippered pocket on the front flap is perfect for keeping keys and tickets readily accessible. It also has 2 mesh side pockets for a water bottle and accessories and a zippered back pocket that stores a notepad or magazines. The case uses the M.A.S. (Modular Accessory System) attachment slots to customize the bag with optional accessories. The bag is carried by a handle or an attached, adjustable shoulder strap. The bag has a Piggy-Back Pocket for slipping the bag over the handle of rolling luggage.

Picked up this bag in a hurry for a trip, and it was fantastic. The top zipper gives you quick access to pull your DSLR. I had the new Nikon D3100 in it. Carries all the things I need and it light. The strap is heavy duty and strap to bag fasteners are metal so good quality. I found the back handle useful when you don't have time to put the sling on and need to move fast. My bag became inverted a few times and everything stayed inside. I was thinking this would be a temp bag till I get a thinktank bag but I'm keeping this one. It has Velcro straps on the front so you don't need to clip the front during a shoot, just pull open and get your memory cards or whatever you need and drop it down to hold closed with Velcro. I can put a netbook in the back compartment and that works fine, I find when I put a full 15" laptop in the back it makes the front budge a tad. It's not too annoying, but I see it was done to reduce the size and weight of the bag. Weight is very important to me. I carried this bag all day, didn't get tired of toting it around till mid day. So it's pretty decent and shoulder strap is good, the wide strap provides even coverage over your shoulder so that helps. Only major complaint I have is the front clip, if you're in a hurry and don't align it properly one of the side clipping tongs can bend to the outside of the clip shroud while the other clip is in place. not sure if that made since so yeah the clip design isn't too spectacular but long as you take your time it will be fine. Overall very happy with it.

I bought this bag since I needed to carry my camera and laptop as personal item for an upcoming trip. Most other backpacks I've seen are to big to pass as second carry-on in economy class. This bag is barely bigger than my regular laptop bag and yet I can get my Canon 50D with 4 lenses (1 large and 3 small) in it, plus my MacBook Air 11" and the iPad with all chargers and it. It's not something I want to carry for a long day, but as a travel photo bag this is perfect.

On the negative side, I do share the sentiment about the clip others have voiced. It looks fancy but you have to be careful to align it correctly or it not only will not close, but it will get stuck good. The shoulder padding could have been a bit more generous and the hardware could be a bit "beefier".

Pros:
Has laptop pocket.
Somewhat adjustable, can fit most lenses.
Side pockets are convenient.
Fairly durably and attractive.
Nice texture.
I've used it several times a week for 3 years and not a single part has broken or even shown much wear.

Cons:
The main pocket doesn't seal. The cover just velcros over it, but if keep any small items in there, they can fall out. Also exposes your camera and lenses to humidity and potentially rain/dirt.
There is NO WAY to make this thing stand upright when you put it down. The weight distribution of your gear will make it fall forward every time, possibly dumping everything in your loose pockets onto the ground.
Shortage of storage options, the main pocket is the only place that will hold lenses or bodies. A large body (1D, 5Dm2) can basically take up so much of the main pocket that unless you're putting tiny 50mm lenses in there, the body (and attached lens) might be the only thing that will fit. This makes its usefulness very limited. Don't count on having much room for any other large items like speedlights.
The accessory pocket is OK, and has a zipper, but none of the inner pockets seal at all. It has pouches for memory cards, batteries, filters, which are fine. But as soon as you put the bag down, it will tip over and dump everything out of these organized pockets and when you unzip it, everything will be in a big pile. Not cool, especially if you're trying to hold glass filters or something.
I'm sure this is an issue with most messenger bag styles but leaning over will make this thing swing like a big pendulum and crash into stuff, especially if you have a laptop or heavy lenses in there.

I don't recommend the single strap if you carry your laptop and a large body + lenses in here. It will make your shoulder sore quickly. Get a backpack.

First, the rating's actually 5/7 for reasons below, because I would hate to rate a Tamrac product lower than 5 stars. It works great for my D7000 + 18-200 lens & 13", MacBook or iPad. There's plenty of room for cell phones, iPods, another short lens or two, and the usual chargers, cables, mini-hard drive, etc. t's construction is the usually Tamrac superior grade that lasts forever. I have Tamrac bags over 20 years old that have been abused but show little wear, and this one's at least as good. Two minor cons: There's only one carrying handle on the top, which makes hand carrying a little awkward. The pockets on the inside for storing accessories like batteries and memory cards are deep and narrow making it difficult to reach in. The Amazon price is great considering the quality of this bag.

Just got this, and used it for the first time for an entire day of photographing a motorsports convention.
I went to a convention and wanted to take my sony A7 with 3 lenses. And space to put all of the flyers and brochures that I would invariably pick up. This bag was perfect for the job. It held all my gear with space to spare. I took:
Sony A7 body with a Sigma 12-24 Canon mount lens with the Canon to Sony adapter and lens hood.
Sony 24-240mm lens with lens hood
Zeiss 55mm 1.8 lens with lens hood
5 Batteries
and a water bottle in one of the 2 outside mesh pockets

There was still space inside for 1 more medium lens or 2 small lenses.

By the end of the convention it also held a free t-shirt that i picked up.
about 10 catalogs ranging from 4 pages to over 100 pages adding an extra 3-5 lbs
and there was still space left. more catalogs could have gone in the laptop pocket. and more stuff in the front compartment.

I really like the top zipper pocket that allows me to have access to the camera gear without having to open the top flap. The strap is comfortable even after a full day.

The only complaints and the only reason keeping the 5th star away were:
It will not stand up, it always topples over to the front.
there is no way to completely seal the camera compartment. there is a zipper access flap on the top but the main flap just has a clip. If you will be going to windy and dusty areas, (sports played on the dirt such as motorcross, or going to the beach. Dirt and Sand will find a way in.)
