Tamron's SP 24-70mm is a high quality, highly functional, high speed standard zoom lens covering the 24-70mm focal range. It includes both Tamron's proprietary VC (Vibration Compensation) Image stabilization to reduce shake and its USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive) motor, enabling speedy, silent autofocusing. This SP (Super Performance) series lens makes full use of specialized glass elements in its lens layout, designed with top priority on image quality, including three LD elements and two XR (Extra Refractive Index) glasses. Tamron has minimized all types of chromatic aberration in the SP 24-70mm, making it a lens at the top of its class whether you use it on a digital APS-C, full frame, or 35mm SLR camera. The SP 24-70mm F/2.8 aperture enables a balance between brilliant resolution and beautiful soft blur effects. This ideal lens makes full use of Tamron's rounded diaphragm and the uncontrived, artistic blur that it provides. It is also Tamron's first lens to feature our new moisture-resistant construction. I put the lens through a series of carefully controlled tests. The lens was nowhere near as sharp as I expected it to be. Doing more research on the Internet I found out that others are having problems with the auto-focus on the Canon 5D cameras. This lens is obviously made for Canon cameras and I am disappointed that if there are compatibility problems this would not be mentioned by Tamron or Amazon. If the lens does not work with ALL Canon DSLR cameras I think that should be indicated. It is frustrating to go through the effort of purchasing and returning product due to known compatibility issues. I give it a low rating due to inadequate product description information.
UPDATE: 5/1/2017 - Make sure and test your lens with video. I hadn't done so until almost one year after I bought it, and found a big flaw, where a few times per minute the video completely goes white, then goes back to normal after about one second. I tested my other Canon lens with video, and the problem went away, so that is how I figured out it was the Tamron lens and not the camera. It is currently in for repair under warranty, I'll update this review how that goes, but I'm unhappy this broke, and I bet if I had tried video earlier, this lens would have been like this from day one. No problem ever with images, it continues to do well there.
I suppose my biggest compliant, and it is big, is that my copy of this lens is normally soft at F2.8. Most pictures I take are at F2.8, and I'd have to say that only about 5 of several thousand pictures taken at F2.8 have been razor sharp. Since I'm new to photography and this is only my second lens, I've thought that the problem was me, but I'm starting to realize that it's probably the lens. This, especially after I got my hands on the Canon 24-70mm F2.8 (no IS/VC) and my shots were much improved on sharpness at F2.8. I will say that this Tamron lens is sharper at F4 than the Canon 70-200 F2.8 at F4. Perhaps my copy is not focusing well with my camera. I'm going to send it in to be calibrated, hopefully that'll solve my problems. Although, doing research around the net, I see that softness at F2.8 seems to be a common problem with this lens.
