Best bang for your buck!

Used this lens recently on a newborn session. I've never shot with the certain "Art" lens that is similar so I can't really compare, but after all of the nightmare focus stories with the "art" lens, I decided to opt for this little gem instead. So glad I did! I shot wide open at f/1.8 for most of this session and occasionally bumped up to f/2 or f/2.8. No issues whatsoever with focusing, even in dim light. The vibration control really helps in low light as well. This was paired with my Nikon D750. Can't wait to get outside and use this on some dramatic portraits!

Great image quality and superlative feature set at a good price--pretty much an ideal walkaround 35mm prime

I wanted a 35mm prime for my D750 to use as a walk-around in street photography and while hiking, etc. Tested this Tamron against the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 ART and the Nikon 1.8G. The Tamron was the clear winner for my needs. Here's why:

- Image Quality: Sigma is the winner for sharpness wide open and definitely better stopped down to f/1.8, but the Tamron is very good even at f/1.8. Both have a nice rendering, with the Tamron showing some CA in certain scenes but nothing that isn't easily corrected in Lightroom. Personally, I liked the Tamron colors the best, but that's pretty subjective. The Nikon was noticeably behind the other two to my eye.

- Form Factor: The Nikon is the winner for portability, being almost unnoticeable on the camera, but the Tamron isn't unduly heavy and balances very nicely on my D750. The Sigma, on the other hand, is kind of a brick for my uses; if only in studio and other controlled settings, it wouldn't have bothered me as much.

- Autofocus: The Nikon was the fastest, but the Tamron is fast enough and very accurate. I eventually did an in-camera autofocus fine tune of +2 but it was very good out of the box. The Sigma was slow and not as consistent as the other two, at least in the copy I rented to test.

- Build Quality: The Sigma feels solid, but the Tamron feels and looks better, and the fluorine coating really works if you get caught in the wet. Manual focus on the Tamron is a joy thanks to the long, precise throw and stiff action of the focus ring. You also get some weather resistance in the Tamron, which is not the case with the Sigma or Nikon rivals. The Nikon, like all the 1.8G primes, is solid but doesn't really feel so to me.

- Features: Here's where the Tamron really shines: I don't use the vibration compensation a lot on a wide prime like this, but when you need it it's great to have and works really well. Great for things like photography in dimly lit cathedrals and the like without needing to break out a tripod or monopod. The best feature of the Tamron, however, has been the incredibly short minimum focus distance--it will focus accurately to within a couple of inches of the outer lens element. Basically gives you a quasi-macro capability without having to tote a macro around, which I've found very useful and a lot of fun when hiking or walking around town with it. The VC and near-macro capability really increase your creative possibilities with this lens, which is what I wanted.

- Other: Six year warranty is pretty awesome.

That's it; I love this thing and am thrilled with the purchase--so much so that I'll probably add the Tamron 85mm f/1.8 at some point soon.

This is a fantastic lens all around. I'm a hybrid photographer/cinematographer and the VC on this is exceptional. I can get regularly capture sharp hand-held exposures of 1sec. It is tack sharp on my bodies without any adjustment necessary. The close focusing distance was another main selling point. The ability to shoot subjects just inches from the lens lends itself well to my creativity.

Wow. I'm speechless. Between the incredible close-distance focusing, and the downright crazy sharpness at just about every aperture, I am blown away. I've always been a fan of Tamron, because of their excellent VC (not sure how I can ever shoot without it now), but this is on a whole new level. Tamron already offered great optical quality for the price, but with this it's just a no-brainer. I've been shooting non-stop for the last 48 hours because of how nice this makes everything look (shooting it on my full-frame d750).

Build quality and fit/finish are superb. This lens just feels great, and balances very nicely on modern DSLR bodies. It's like it was custom-designed for my d750!

Seriously, just try it. If you're unsure, try it and see. I'd be very surprised if you weren't incredibly pleased with the results.

Now if only they'd make an 85mm iteration...hint hint Tamron...

As echoed by other reviewers, if you’re looking for a 35mm prime, this lens is pound for pound by far the best bang for your buck.

Optically it’s fantastic. The VC works a charm and it’s weather sealed.

I’m a professional photographer and I chose this lens over the canon and sigma equivalents based entirely on its functionality and not its price. (And I don’t care about how they all perform at 200% in the bottom left hand corner)

Here’s the catch... I had to send the first copy back. The first lens wouldn’t communicate with the dock, and only worked intermittently with my camera body, with frequent communication errors. I tried calling Tamron customer service which was a total waste of time so I returned it as per amazons policy and bought another copy from a different vendor.

Second copy is flawless, and didn’t even need micro adjustment and couldn’t be happier.

I was bemoaning this to a friend and was told “thems the risks of buying off brand Lenses. Even Kubrick would order several copies of a lens he intended to shoot a movie with. Just to make sure he got a good copy.”

If all this sounds like too much hassle then play it safe, spend the extra and buy the L.

But if you have the balls and the headspace buy this lens. You won’t be disappointed.

This thing is a low light monster! It paired very nicely with my Nikon D750 and focusing accuracy is spot on. Great focal length for street photography and general purpose stuff. It is solidly built and not too heavy to carry around. I love the new look of Tamron SP lens; professional appearance for sure. The Vibration Compensation function works great and it allows me to shoot as low as 1/20th of a second safely. Last but not least, this thing is super sharp, even wide open. But of course it gets sharper as you stop it down. Highly recommended.

This lens is incredibly well made, it has numerous advantages of the 35mm RF 1.8. when with the EF to R adapter given available option ( 2020).

If I was doing professional work I'd go with this lens, its auto focus speeds are fast, Image stabilization is amazing, and its noticeably sharper than the Canon EF 35 1.8 wide open, not to mention weather sealed and very quiet.

A benefit of this lens for video or time laps photography is the ability to use the EF to R - DN filter.

The drawback is the metal construction while durable is heavy and it's a noticeably bigger.

Given I'm I'm using this lens for video and weight and size is important I went with the canon.

If I had a budget for 2 x 35mm 1.8 lenses I'd have this one for photography and time laps Videography and the Canon for video.

A pesar de que este modelo de lente es compatible con la consola USB de Tamron para micro ajuste, al colocarlo el software de la consola me dice que el lente primero necesita ser actualizado con un firmware que no puede ser hecho con la consola, sino por un distribuidor autorizado de Tamron. Desgraciadamente en México no conozco ninguno. Así que tengo este lente que en teoría debería poder micro ajustar, pero no puedo porque primero se necesita una actualización que no le puedo hacer yo y no hay quién la haga en mi país y el lente viene con un back focus pronunciado a distancias medias. Cuando logro un buen enfoque la calidad es muy buena, pero no lo recomiendo por ese detalle.

Eso sí, la calidad de las fotos es muy buena, pero definitivamente pienso que debí de haber optado por el Sigma 35mm Art, que ya antes he tenido. Quise probar Tamron porque me gusta la marca, pero me decepcionó este problema.

My new favourite lens

This lens is so good that I barely have words for it. I've been searching for a top tier 35mm prime lens for a while, with my choices being this Tamron 35 f/1.8, the Nikon 35 f/1.8 FX, and the Sigma ART f/1.4. With the Sigma being exceptionally large, heavy, and expensive, it became a competition between the Tamron and the Nikon.

The Tamron is better in every way compared to the Nikon — Tamron is weather sealed, better built (not as plasticky), and has Vibration Compensation (aka Vibration Reduction or Images Stabilization, which is a rarity on these types of lenses). Best of all, it's sharp beyond words and autofocuses like a laser beam every time. The hood is beefy, the focus ring is wide and grippy, and even the VC switch has a nice heft to it.

I bough this primarily for indoor wedding work, when a 50mm lens is too tight, but my 24mm is way too wide and distorts people too much. A 35mm lens is the perfect compromise for a wide view without distortion.

I don't think I'll ever take this off my camera.

Overall very happy with my purchase. For those who like the 35mm focal length this lens is amazing. I love the fact that it can focus so closely, eliminating the need to bring a dedicated macro lens (unless you absolutely need that 1:1 reproduction ratio). Build quality is top notch with an outer metal barrel, it reminds me of Fujifilm XF quality. Bokeh is nice and not too busy, but don't expect to get crazy thin depth of field, this is a 35mm focal length after all. I would definitely recommend this lens to people who want a do it all fast prime.

Great so far, got a good deal on this lens, its super sharp and super sturdy. Shooting wide open it remains pretty sharp and gives a good background blur. Stabilization seems good as well. I've been using on a 5D mk. II and it feel like the camera is limiting the lens especially after f2.8 where everything is razer sharp... super happy with it so far. Only possible downside is its weight, pretty heavy, but i'm happy knowing it can take a beating and will live on.
