The one major concern I have with the saw is the exhaust. With the Pure Fire engine, the exhaust is a catalytic converter of sorts and wow, does it get hot! I'm talking cherry red hot!!! And the exiting gasses go forward, so when cutting a piece of large dry wood, I have had the wood start on fire. You must really watch how long you keep the exhaust near any dry grass or wood.
Overall, I am very impressed with the power, performance, and ease of operation. This machine is an excellent buy for the money with an unbeatable warranty.
I have owned this saw for nearly a year now and decided to give an update on how I believe it is holding up.
The exhaust heat is still an issue, but now that I am aware of it, I avoid situations that would allow it to become a problem. The stop switch also went bad, but for $5 thats all I have had to put into this saw.
With nearly 100 hours on the unit as of this past weekend and all I can say is I am completely in love with the saw. The unit consumes VP Racing "Small Engine Fuel" and Amsoil Saber 100:1 Premix oil exclusively.Read more ›
I had bought this particular brand because Tanaka has a fairly good reputation in the lawn care industry for building reliable long lasting 2-stroke motors. I don't know when they shifted production to China but this model is definitely not made in Japan. My impression is they have applied a great deal of cost reduction in the design, however overall build quality seems adequate.
After assy, oiling, gassing, etc, the engine started on the fifth pull - not bad for the first start (with old 87 octane gas to boot). After warming up, I stopped it and re-tightened the chain which had loosened considerably. Subsequent re-starts, warm and cold have been reasonable, second or third pull.
Power and ease of cutting is what you'd expect from this size of saw - no surprises, it works like a chainsaw.
Time will tell regarding durability but so far, I am generally pleased.
1. Catalyst gets very...very HOT. This is not unique to this particular saw as its the EPA that pits it in the exhaust. Mine got so hot that it started a fire that melted the left side of the saw covers and totally melted the flimsy front handle.
2. Flimsy front handle.
3. Expensive and hard to get parts
4. Non adjustable carb (also EPA mandated)
5. Safety chain that comes with it (and most all new saws) is slow. Replace with a pro chain that comes with lots of warning labels!
1. Cheap if you hold out for a.deal
2. Made in China (usually bad but made #1 possible)
3. Quality made to last. (Metal cases, good carb, tough, nikasil lined)
4. Tanaka design
If I were to buy this again...and I may because parts are expensive...Read more ›

This is a homeowners chainsaw. The reason I bought this saw is that I know of a dealer that can fix it if I can't do the repair myself, so he said. Read morePublished 4 months ago by Dennis in SoCal
Ordered as a backup for my other saws. Just in case.
Good finish and works a charm. About as hard to start as any quality brand. A decomp button helps. Read more
