I have been cutting wood with my family for over 10 years. Recently I was in the market for a new, larger saw. Having been around Tanaka for a while, I was excited to try the new big saw. The 7 year warranty is a major factor as no one else can compete. The power is very impressive. The saw starts quickly and easily with the decompression valve. The unit is easy to run and doesn't vibrate your hands all to pieces when operating for extended periods. It seems to be good on gas, too as well as burning very clean.

The one major concern I have with the saw is the exhaust. With the Pure Fire engine, the exhaust is a catalytic converter of sorts and wow, does it get hot! I'm talking cherry red hot!!! And the exiting gasses go forward, so when cutting a piece of large dry wood, I have had the wood start on fire. You must really watch how long you keep the exhaust near any dry grass or wood.

Overall, I am very impressed with the power, performance, and ease of operation. This machine is an excellent buy for the money with an unbeatable warranty.

I have owned this saw for nearly a year now and decided to give an update on how I believe it is holding up.

The exhaust heat is still an issue, but now that I am aware of it, I avoid situations that would allow it to become a problem. The stop switch also went bad, but for $5 thats all I have had to put into this saw.

With nearly 100 hours on the unit as of this past weekend and all I can say is I am completely in love with the saw. The unit consumes VP Racing "Small Engine Fuel" and Amsoil Saber 100:1 Premix oil exclusively.

First - a gripe. Why do non-native English speakers feel competent to write technical manuals in English. I wouldn't dream of writing in Chinese and rightly so. Frankly, the manual is confusing and misleading. If you follow the initial steps regarding the installation of the bar/chain you will miss a critical requirement, first releasing the brake band.

I had bought this particular brand because Tanaka has a fairly good reputation in the lawn care industry for building reliable long lasting 2-stroke motors. I don't know when they shifted production to China but this model is definitely not made in Japan. My impression is they have applied a great deal of cost reduction in the design, however overall build quality seems adequate.

After assy, oiling, gassing, etc, the engine started on the fifth pull - not bad for the first start (with old 87 octane gas to boot). After warming up, I stopped it and re-tightened the chain which had loosened considerably. Subsequent re-starts, warm and cold have been reasonable, second or third pull.

Power and ease of cutting is what you'd expect from this size of saw - no surprises, it works like a chainsaw.

Time will tell regarding durability but so far, I am generally pleased.

Assembly was easy after releasing the chain break, Run on the 2nd crank, actually the first with full choke but died, started on half choke. Probably the least amount of vibration on your hands that I have ever experienced. Cut quickly and smoothly thru 18 inch Red Oak I was cleaning up after the Wind Damage in WV. I will recommend to everyone.

I received this saw from Amazon in a fast shipping fashion. I have used Stihl, Echo, Poulan and other brands but this is the best starting and running saw i have ever used. I followed directions on starting and it started the second pull and the first pull there after. It sure has the power to cut big trees and it is a breeze for limbs. Know wonder they put a seven year warranty on there chainsaws.

I was attracted to the Tanaka (by Hitachi) chain saw with its claim of control features and long warranty. It uses Oregon brand cutting chain and guide bar. I realize that it would not be as tough as the big name Stihl saws and the like, but I am not going to be using it that regular or ruggedly. A reliable machine with enough power to handle moderate tasks would suffice. I have now run about 5 tank fulls through the saw. It has sufficient power, and has started quite reliably, cold or hot. I'm running 32:1 2-cycle oil mixture during break-in, instead of 50:1. Will probably get more power when I run the leaner mixture. Only small issues is the automatic chain oiler does not seem to have much of a volume adjustment (seems a little too light to me). And the top mounted air filter cap screw tends to vibrate loose (little drop of thread locker will solve that). Taking care of the exterior, I expect to enjoy a long relationship cutting wood with my Tanaka.

I recently bought this saw from Amazon's discount site, woot.com for $269+5 shipping. Especially at this price, it is an incredible bargain for a competent saw for the homeowner like myself that cuts alot of firewood. I would imagine this is a plenty sufficient saw for commercial duty. I have much experience with power equipment from a youth spent on our families sawmill to years of working on them...especially since the introduction of ethanol fuel.... I own personally 6 saws including Makita/Dolmar, Echo, and Stihl. I can tell you without hesitation that this saw is good. Dont fear the Made in China label here. It isnt a cheap Poulen or knockoff brand disposable saw. Its metal cased instead of all plastic, has a good walbro carb instead of a knockoff and is designed and manufactured to take a beating as any real commercial saw needs to be. Cylinder is Nikasil plated too. Plenty of power, smooth and vibration free, easy to repair and to work on too. I love this saw!

Negatives
1. Catalyst gets very...very HOT. This is not unique to this particular saw as its the EPA that pits it in the exhaust. Mine got so hot that it started a fire that melted the left side of the saw covers and totally melted the flimsy front handle.
2. Flimsy front handle.
3. Expensive and hard to get parts
4. Non adjustable carb (also EPA mandated)
5. Safety chain that comes with it (and most all new saws) is slow. Replace with a pro chain that comes with lots of warning labels!

Pros
1. Cheap if you hold out for a.deal
2. Made in China (usually bad but made #1 possible)
3. Quality made to last. (Metal cases, good carb, tough, nikasil lined)
4. Tanaka design

If I were to buy this again...and I may because parts are expensive...
