Why You Should Monitor Body Water and Fat Percentage
If you're like most people, you're not drinking enough water. If you wait until you feel thirsty, your body is already suffering from the effects of mild dehydration. You continually lose water during the day through sweat, urine and breathing. The amount varies due to several reasons, including your physical activity level, illness, medications, poor nutrition, or even climatic conditions. Monitoring your body water percentage allows you to quickly compensate if your levels are low, allowing your body to function more efficiently. Having the right amount of water in your body will not only make you feel healthier, but you'll also reduce your risk of developing serious health problems in the longer term.
High body fat levels can reduce your endurance and have been linked to heart disease cancer and diabetes. Tanita's body composition analyzers monitor your body fat and body water levels with Bioelectric Impedance Analysis, or BIA, the same advanced technology used by doctors. Foot pads send a low-level electrical signal. Then BIA measures the resistance to this signal as it travels through the body.
The Tanita BF679W is calibrated for standard adults and children and stores data for 2 people and measures body fat in increments of 0.5 percentage points. This scale also features a guest mode, allowing you to use the unit without losing information already assigned to the personal keys. The scale's large, easy-to-read 2.25-inch, 2-line LCD shows weight and body fat simultaneously, and instantly compares these readings to healthy ranges based on the user's age and gender. Simply supply your gender, age, height and weight into the memory, step on the scale, and the monitor does the rest. The results are analyzed according to each user's information, and the result is the one of the most comprehensive at-home readings you can get.
Operating on four AA batteries (included), the Tanita BF679W is intended for use by persons up to 300 pounds and is backed by Tanita's three-year warranty.

I considered several scales, ultimately narrowing my search down to this and a newer scale by a company called Greater Goods. I chose this scale because even though it is not a new model and was ten dollars more than the Greater Goods scale, I was ultimately skeptical about buying from a relatively unproven brand whose products include scales and...um...coffee?? From past experience, I knew Tanita to be a quality scale from a manufacturer invested solely in the business of making scales, and I knew the life cycle to be much longer than many other manufacturers. It bodes well to me that this model is at least 12 years old and is still being manufactured and sold.
I don't need (or want) a scale that syncs with my other devices and I'm not an athlete, so aside from wanting a general sense of my BMI and accurate weight measurements to within +/- .1 or .2 lbs, my priorities were: that the materials be durable, that the scale be accurate and able to work on various surfaces (my floor is uneven and I have the unit placed on a mat), that it have some thickness to it and to NOT turn on automatically when stepping on it (I often use this for a boost in height in front of my mirror and I don't want to run out batteries unnecessarily), and that it not look horrible in my bathroom.
This scale fit my needs as closely as possible. It's accurate, consistent on different surfaces, seems sturdy, and is unobtrusive in my bathroom. However, I would have preferred the design of my previous Tanita scale, for two reasons. First, the surface of this scale is slightly convex, which means that when stepping on it, the scale feels like it will tip sideways or that I will roll my ankle. Second, the metal pads for the electric current are of an awkward shape and are placed a bit too far apart for my average-sized-female feet. Still, relative to my previous Tanita, I get the features I wanted and then some (water measurement and memory buttons for two users), so I'm glad that I made this choice and hope that this scale serves me at least as long and as well as my previous scale.
My DR. said that my scale (weight ) is more accurate than her slide scale at her office and I agree.
The only slightly negative thing I can say is that if I weigh in at a certain weight if I step off and weigh again sometimes I weigh up to a couple ounces differently either up or down each time I step on and I am a stickler for accuracy... so what I do to correct this issue is I reweigh until I get two EXACT weigh ins to the ounce then that is the weight I consider my weight that day. Sometimes I only need to weigh in twice for that to happen and sometimes it could be 3 or 4 or 5 times in a row. Not that big of a deal.... and to be fair I noticed this is something that happens with at least ANY and EVERY digital scale I have ever tried.
I love this scale other than that and am glad I got it. Husband agrees.
This morning it gave me 120.2, 117.4 and then 119.2. Absolutely useless if you want to watch your weight. I had a Tanita scale for 10 years before buying this one. Quality has plummeted.
I replaced this scale with a simple scale that is accurate.
