An excellent introduction covering the themes, history, philosophy, and practices of the Mahasiddhas makes the book invaluable for anyone studying Tantric Buddhism. And the author gives the romanized Apabrahmsa and Tibetan for each poem, which is a gift to those studying the original langauges of the poems. Along with Guenther, this book is a great treasure for the field of Tantric Buddhist studies.

Scholarly hubris

Thanks to Roger R. Jackson's "Tantric Treasures" those desiring accessible translations of undeniable masters of Buddhism - Saraha and Tilopa (as well as Kanha, with whom I was unfamiliar) - have cause to celebrate. Saraha, for example, is freed from the opacity imposed by translators such as H. Guenther and D. Snellgrove. That's the good news. The bad news is that Jackson, like so many other scholars, presumes that because he can translate such works he possesses an insight into them. Devoid of the illuminating gnosis exposing such works as articulations of the ineffable, he relies upon rational thought alone for his explications. In so doing Jackson distracts and misleads readers who should attend only to their inner experience to appreciate that to which the masters refer. Lacking such gnosis, Jackson finds paradox where none exist. Still, his translations have done a great service for those with, as the Buddhists say, "a thirst for the real."

A Gem of Book

Perhaps this book will appeal most directly to yoga practitioners (such as this reviewer) looking to learn more about the tradition of yoga extending beyond any mat or studio into all aspects of life. But there is much more to be found here: because these collections date from the last stage of Buddhism's maturation within India, anyone with an interest in the development of Buddhist doctrine and practice will find this book to be a gem. The translator provides the historical and cultural context in a crisply written introduction and in short comments to the verses, striking a balance (appropriately enough considering the yoga theme) between too much and too little detail. The reader seeking more is offered many gateways, from the cover art, the credit for which links one to a website with a wealth of images of Buddhist art, to the bibliography, which is a treasure by itself, listing a wide range of contemporary English language scholarship on, and translations of, Buddhist works. The book is tastefully designed: the generous amount of space on each page of verse invites the contemplation these verses deserve and the intelligent use of various fonts facilitates reading.
