The Tao Te Ching is the most widely translated book after the bible and is said to be by Lao Tzu by was probably written by several people. It consists of a collection 81 short pieces, poems and proverbs regarding the Tao, or Way of Life. It is difficult to understand. The Tao is a road or path—the way of ultimate reality. Many of the statements refer to a “wise man” who is in reality the king and much of the book consists of advice as to how he should behave. Taoism, which is the religion of the Way, has three goals, happiness, wealth and long life. Many of these statements are based on paradox and the idea of keeping things in balance. For example, yin and yang are complementary, yet opposite concepts. Verse 28 says, ”Be aware of the white all around you ; but remembering the black that is there. Verse 47 is another example:

“The world may be known without leaving the house;
The Way may be seen apart from the windows.
The further you go, the less you will know.

The thoughts expressed are paradoxical but they assert the contrast between reality and appearances.

This is a short book and difficult to understand, but it is well worth the effort.

This is a decent introduction, but it's the author's interpretation. It's not authentic. Some people may say that's not a bad thing. It is if you haven't read the authentic interpretation and translation by Skylight Illuminations and haven't been able to compare.

This book shows the importance of non-being and taking a step back from ourselves and our lives to understand what's truly important and relevant.

The translation is very stilted and is not very user friendly in my opinion. I'll try it again at a later date.
