We needed a barcode reader for our school library that could simply and accurately read the barcodes on our library books. This reader was delivered "plug-in" ready and worked as soon as we took it out of the box. We had to assemble the stand that came with the reader. All we needed was a small Phillips head screwdriver and five minutes of time. The barcode reader looks functional and appropriate in the library and does its job perfectly.

I bought the Taotronics Laser Barcode Scanner to use with the Collectorz software to catalog my collection of DVD's and BD's. I unboxed the scanner, plugged it in, and it just started working. I love it when things just work. Well, 556 DVD's later, I'm still impressed. It's weighty enough to 'feel' solid, well made. The stand looks lightweight in the pictures on Amazon but again, it's well made with a steel plate to give it enough heft to hold the scanner solidly. Even the packaging was well done. The outer box is sturdy, easy open/close so it works nicely as a place to keep the scanner when it's not in use. Screws, etc are in ziplock bags, and so-on...

Nothing more to say. It's nicely made, it's not very expensive, and it Works!

I must say Taotonics's customer service is excellent. I guess I got the one in a million readers that was bad but their customer service led me through tests and we finally determined that the reader was bad. They sent me an advanced replacement (which works perfectly) and sent me a UPS label so I could send back the bad one (all on their dime). They are a wonderful company to work with and I appreciate their helpfulness. Its a great reader and worked right out of the box on Win XP (32bit) and Win 7 (64bit).

I ordered this scanner to scan ISBN numbers from the barcode on the back of books in my library so as to enter them quickly into a library database. After three days of trying, I gave up and returned the item to Amazon.

1. Manual: Not helpful for a non-scanner-techie like me. Outdated, judging by the references to old PC models mentioned. No mention of compatibility with a Mac (which I use). Filled with scores of bar codes to initialize the scanner for specific purposes, none of which are explained (they are labeled if you know the barcode lingo, but not explained). I could never find one that captured ISBN numbers.

2. Customer Service: Called Taotronics (marginal English) customer service in the U.S. -- no help at all. They recommended I return it, but gave me the email of tech support in China.

3. Tech Support: received a reply email from China within 24 hours with steps on how to initialize the scanner using one of the codes in the Manual and a MS Word attachment containing a barcode image of an ISBN number which I was to scan. I did, but the scanner failed to deliver the number to my computer. (A scanner works like a USB keyboard -- if you can a barcode it will deliver the resulting information from the barcode to a text document, a database, spreadsheet -- wherever your cursor is located.) I emailed them back with my failed results. They emailed back the next day and declared the unit defective. So I have returned it to Amazon.

4. The unit itself is nice, especially the hands-free stand for rapid scanning. So I may try another one just to see if the original was indeed defective. But I give it a low score because it didn't work and for the unhelpful U.S. Customer Service response.Read more ›

I run a fitness program for women and we recently switched to a scan card check-in system. The company that manages my software "strongly encouraged me" to buy my scanner from them so I could have tech support but all of theirs were a couple hundred dollars and this was about $40 and they seemed basically the same. I was really worried that this would be a waste of money and that it wouldn't work with my CMS but it was a big enough price difference for me to take the chance. Well it has worked right out of the box (with super basic assembly of the stand) and we have been scanning all of our members in quickly and easily. We have only been using it for a few weeks so I will update after it has really been used and let you know how it's working but so far so good.

We are storing food in our basement and wanted to use a barcode scanner to make it easy to keep track of our inventory. The Taotronics TT-BS003 scanner works like a charm right out of the box and no drivers to install for Windows 7 computers! Right now I'm just using the default factory settings but the manual comes with a bunch of bar codes you can scan to change how the scanner works; pretty neat idea! We ordered this on Friday before Christmas and it came on Monday, Christmas Eve with the two-day Prime Account free shipping option.

The assembly of the stand was easy although the pictorial diagram showing the assembly process was a little different from reality in that some pieces were already pre-assembled; keep that in mind so you aren't looking for loose parts in the bag that have already been assembled in the factory such as the "nut sheath" and the "turning axis" parts. Also, the drawing fails to show the two screws that hold the Pedestal to the Link Pole. The screws were not missing from the package, just not show on the drawing. They go into the two holes on the bottom of the pedestal and screw into the Link Pole BEFORE you mount the weight-added "iron patch" (or better described as an "iron plate").

The scanner quickly and easily reads UPC bar codes from as far away as 12" (the code was 1 5/8" long). It seems to do well on codes printed on plastic bags even when the plastic is not flat (slightly crinkled). I think this scanner is the best bang for the buck.
