Our home is about 2,500 sq ft, two story 1990's brick with wood frame ranch. I had previously used a LinkSys WRT1900ACS router that did okay, but left fringes of our home with spotty coverage. With 2 adults working and doing friend/family video calls I wanted to upgrade speed and reliability.
Prior to buying the TT AC3000 I had been weighing the Netgear Orbi as a whole house solution, then stumbled upon a review of the TaoTronics mesh on Gizmodo. Past experience with TaoTronics has been positive so I decided to try the less expensive TT before paying lots more for the Orbi. I'm SO PLEASED I did.
Set-up was pretty easy, and the only challenge was patience on my part. I glanced at the directions and used the app, and it went fairly smoothly EXCEPT for allowing time for the individual unit updates. I got impatient and started to imagine something was wrong, BUT IN FACT they just needed time to do firmware updating.
So TIP #1 BE PATIENT after you turn each unit on - the app actually tells you when the update is needed, downloaded and ready to install.
Coverage is strong, with 1 unit in the downstairs semi-centrally located (previous spot), and the other two on either central sides of the house. Speed is super quick and exceeds my current cable internet speed of 220 MB. The 'backhaul' channel - 5.8 - works as advertised to keep the 2.4 and 5g running fast. Both upstairs units get fast speeds as well (like 780 MB+). I don't currently have LAN ethernet devices connected to any of the units. All of my devices simply needed to be rebooted and in one or two cases reconnected to the new wifi network. I used the same name and password, but the Epson printer needed to be directed again to the 'new' units. Likewise my Nest thermostat simply needed to go in and point it to the new wifi and connect again.
Since set-up and reconnecting existing devices, we've had no downtime (except for a short cable outage that was on the ISP). I'm pleased as can be and would recommend the TaoTronics AC3000. I did buy the 3 unit version just to be safe and for future flexibility, but the difference of $50 wasn't concerning.
I am aware that these units are Wifi 5, but I don't anticipate the need for/see the advantage of Wifi 6 on the Orbi anytime soon. I've had the units in use for 2.5 weeks now. I used the online coupon, but otherwise got no incentive for this review.
