About the Author

M. L. Buchman has over 35 novels and an ever-expanding flock of short stories in print. This book is typical M L Buchman. Terse tight writing that describes the situation very realistically. It contains both bad to foul language and explicit sexual content. If you do not like these words in your reading then proceed no further. Having said that Buchman does not use the style to titillate but to express the real gritty conditions for budding black op operators. You can almost smell the dust of a parade ground and feel the tension between soldiers. This is the story of two soldiers, one male, one female, who are vying to be accepted in the elite force. The girl has huge obstacles to overcome both physically and sexually in the face of male opposition. Her main rival is a young man she has fallen in love with but they must remain apart for the duration of their tour of duty. He is just as attracted to her but keeps his feelings well hidden. As the dangerous op plays out they realise they cannot deny those feelings and so are subject to even more pressure than already exists. It is a good tale and worth the reading if you like stories of the undercover work of anti terrorism.

Loved this military thriller-romance! I am happy to expand my list of strong heroines to include Carla Anderson, age 24, from Colorado, who enlisted in the army on the day she turned 18. A fierce, independent spirit, Carla has learned to survive and succeed on her own since age 12, and the death of her mother in the service, all but abandoned in her teenage years by an alcoholic father, whom she drove home from the pub some nights. Carla does so well in the army, she applies to join Delta Force, a group of soldiers so elite that the services do not officially recognize them. The book begins on the day she reports for her Delta Force evaluation. If Carla makes it through the training period, from a group of 120 down to seven, she will be the first female ever to earn a spot.
I liked the military setting, the secret missions and the geopolitical situations I read as we watch Carla push herself, day after day on land, air and water. The author works hard for the romance 'shipper readers -- there are a lot of men intrigued by pretty, driven Carla, so who will catch her eye? I must admit, an older man, who trained Carla's brother and looked out for her as she soldiered through her training, seemed like an excellent candidate to be the ultimate partner for Carla (better than the author's more obvious choice). I would have liked to see him try to spark some romantic interest in Carla. But Carla doesn't even wonder if he is available, and keeps her eyes squarely on the Delta Force prize (so focused and walled off emotionally, she is just this side of automaton). On a training op, Carla sees another woman on Delta force and is careful not to make even eye contact. In her soft moments (there are a couple), Carla taps into her comfort zone and tweaks the language of a military pledge to express herself. The man bursts out laughing. Recommend!

I finished this book close to a week ago and have carefully considered how to review it. Anyone who peruses my reviews will see I'm an avid M.L. Buchman fan and through the years have read and reviewed nearly everything he's written--high marks, too. I love military romance suspense.

The first quarter (or so) of the story shows Kyle Reeves and Carla Anderson's Delta selection. I kept experiencing déjà vu--then realized why. It's almost exactly like Eric L. Haney's INSIDE DELTA FORCE, a non-fiction book about that operator's experience through selection and then inside the Unit. It felt like Buchman (whose writing I usually can't get enough of) wanted to put all of his Delta research into the book. The story really didn't start until Delta selection ended. Yeah, Kyle and Carla meet, gain respect for one another, get the hots for each other, but that could have all happened "before" the story begins. I'd like to know if any other readers found the similarities between INSIDE DELTA FORCE (nonfiction) and TARGET ENGAGED (DELTA FORCE, book 1) to be too much.

Once the selection for that group was complete and the training began, then the call to insert came, the story really picked up. I enjoyed watching the characters working as a unified team, facing obstacles that showed their amazing skills in the best light and set themselves up for bigger problems because of their baggage and limitations (because no one, not even an elite warrior, is perfect).

The chemistry between Kyle and Carla is hot, explosive, and present from the moment the two meet.Their ongoing relationship became a big part of the story and played a key role. Some Buchman fans will be surprised at the quantity of sex and sexually charged conversations/scenes/situations as this book has many and his previous titles have had much less. Maybe this stark increase is because the relationship between the two is so integral to the progression of the story.

All in all I really liked Kyle and Carla--each for their own strengths and their own internal belief systems and their own doubts. Carla is a powerful, strong, conquer-the-world type of woman and Kyle's definitely the man she deserves. Per Buchman's catch phrase "Strong Women and The Men They Deserve", this story is a solid fit.

Recommended to fans of military romance suspense, especially those who love contemporary spec ops and save-the-world type of plots. My only big reason for not rating this book a solid 4.5 to 5.0 is the whole opening quarter (probably not 'duplicating', but definitely mirroring) INSIDE DELTA FORCE.

I looked forward to this but finished it a bit disappointed. While both characters are well written and the plot good I found it far fetched how Cara and Kyle behaved during missions. There was not even a whiff of fraternisation mentioned, it felt unprofessional.

I much prefer the Nightstalker books, again the romance bit between close team members sound easy as well, but I am not left with a bad taste.
