Strap tore lose after 60 days, zippers get hung up

I initially loved this bag as it had all the features I wanted and looks great and feels very solid, but after 2 months the shoulder strap ripped completely loose which appears to me to be defective workmanship. I am a frequent purchaser of Amazon prime products and rarely give negative reviews by the way. In this case I do not believe this product is up to the demands of a road warrior such as myself. I have owned many laptop bags in the past and have never had a shoulder strap separate before at all, after years of use of other bags.

One other negative on this bag, it seems like the zippers are very sensitive and don't zip smoothly, they tend to catch and you have to work them carefully when zipping back up, to make sure they don't get cross-wise. The overall quality and feel of the bag is very good so I was pretty surprised to find that the zippers tend to catch when zipping up, and the stitching of the strap didn't hold up.

Unfortunately the Amazon return policy seems to be 30 days. I'm not sure how to get this resolved. I feel like I ought to have some recourse because the strap basically fell apart.

Poor workmanship, straps fray prematurely, I don't want to pay for shipping for "limited lifetime warranty" repairs.

Style: Traveler Backpack for 16- InchVerified Purchase

I purchased my Checkpoint-Friendly Targus backpack in 2012 and have used it a total of 6 times. Yup, 6 times. I fly very infrequently, and that's the only time this backpack has seen any usage--the rest of the time it has been lovingly stored in closet. The straps began fraying earlier this year and have relentlessly unraveled to the point that they are detaching from the body of the pack. Gotta say, it's very discouraging to pay this much for a backpack, use it 6 times and find myself stitching with black embroidery floss and a large needle to get the fraying under control enough that I can use the backpack for one last trip before I throw it in the garbage.

I had an Eagle Creek diaper backpack that we continued to use for years once my child was out of diapers, packing it full of all kinds of stuff, including books for car trips. After 7 or 8 years of rough and regular usage, I washed the pack and gave it to Goodwill. There was not a single fray on the whole thing!

Maybe I should check into Eagle Creek's offerings for travel backpacks. Anything has to be better than this Targus.

Good design - quesionable workmanship

Hey, for $40 you can't expect too much from a bag, but at least you want it to hold together. This one had some missed stitches in the shoulder strap and it just came part at the seams.

Have submitted for warranty repair/replacement.

Otherwise, like the design - no muss / no fuss at x-ray scanners when flying and I can put my plastic bag with my toiletries in the middle fold-out section so it's easy in/out when in line.

Too bad everyone else are so slow and disorganized at security.

Update

Now returning bag #3 to Targus and getting a different replacement model.

All three came apart at the seams - shoulder straps and bottom in my case.

Also with two bags, the adjustable, plastic buckle on the shoulder strap, broke. I have a 15 year old Jansport that held bigger/heavier laptops, and its Fastek buckles held up fine. Targus uses some no-name, cheaply made alternative.

They have to discontinue this model - it's bad business.

Targus worthless warranty

I've had this bag for almost 4 years and have rarely used it. I recently notice a hole in the bottom of the bag. It had a "limited lifetime warranty", but when I called Targus about it, they claimed was due to "wear and tear" and not covered by the warranty. Other than the hole in the material, the bag is nearly like new condition. Although the bag has served it's purpose, the company clearly does not stand by their worthless warranty. Even if heavily used, the bad should have lasted longer than 4 years. I will not purchase another Targus product again.

No more broken laptops

After dropping my laptop in Dulles Airport after getting through security, I knew there had to be a better way. This was much cheaper than the replacement CD-Rom drive that got broken.
The side pockets are easy to throw in drinks for those long, dry-air flights. The laptop section held a 15.4 Dell M4400 (the widest brick-heavy laptop out there) with ease. I love the section in the back padding that allows you to slip it right over the handles of your carry-on with having to worry about it falling off. The middle section gives you plenty of space for magazines, notepads and a some snacks. The pouch section holds my USB drive, iphone and blackberry cables, as well as perfecly holds my noise canceling head phones. The zip-thru pouch that opens up is great for putting a jacket in. So when you unzip to get through security, you throw the jacket in the bins, when it comes out "cooked" on the other side of the X-Ray you through it right back in once you zip it back up.

The greatest part is that it all fits comfortably under the seat in front of you.

The only thing I miss is that my old targus had a shoulder pouch to keep a pack of cigarettes\cell phone in.

I can make it through security, without juggling 3 bins like I use to. Now it is this backpack first, bin full of my shoes, belt and ziplock bag, all being pushed along with my carry-on. I can get through the security X-Ray and running out the other side in less than 30 seconds. Assuming I dont have that guy that has to make 4 trips through the detector cause he forget to remove his keys first, then his belt, then his watch. :)
