In my perspective, there isn't enough gap between my netbook and the chill mat. Sometimes when I lift up my netbook to randomly check if the chill mat is working or not, I'd find that the chill mat is warm just like my netbook because the heat that's created from my netbook warms up the air that comes out of the chill mat. In conclusion, it's warm air trying to cool down my already hot netbook. Warm air rises and cool air sinks.
With that logic in mind, I find that if you create a bigger gap between the chill mat and your netbook, this allows the heat from the netbook to be blown away because the heat wouldn't circulate back down to the chill mat. This ensures that cool air will come out of the chill mat and not warm air. How big the gap should be depends on how much heat your netbook is producing. Do a little bit of experimenting.
I do a lot of heavy photo and video editing on my laptop. I quickly gets overheated and performance suffers greatly. With this, the extra fans help keep my temperature low and my processing speeds high.
Definitely recommend. If I could do it over, I'd still buy the netbook one. It's big enough to hold my macbook pro and was too cheap to ignore.
After having some issues with my router overheating and conking out, I've moved this to my router. The size is perfect to set under the router and keep it cool. For whatever reason, most consumer-grade routers lack an internal fan. I simply set it underneath and plug the USB into the USB input on the router. It's been running non-stop for the past six months with no issues.
I recently bought 2 more units - one to put under a heavily used PS3 and one to keep handy in case I ever need to keep cool another appliance. Not only does the unit work well, Amazon provided it at a cost that is more than reasonable. Thank you Targus ... thank you Amazon.
This netbook pad does the trick. The router sits on top of the two fans and the pad has two horizontal grooves that keep the router from shifting around. Router has a USB port that powers the pad. If the fans last for a long time I'll be happy.
While this one works and has continued to work for the two months that I have owned it... the dust it has accumulated has become a problem. Without it being intuitive and easy to clean, the dust continues to accumulate and even pass through to my computer itself. I've gotten a thin layer of dust on my keyboard keys because of the dust passing through my CPU fans.
So yeah, mine worked... but don't leave it plugged in for an extended period of time.
In agreement with the other reviews about:
- the detachable cord (easily misplaced),
- cord angle (easily frayed),
- slight whirring sounds (could be quieter) BUT still quieter than me screaming when the laptop overheats and shuts down or get fried!
I might pay TEN BUCKS for this given the reviews. However, at the price I paid it was a "no brainer". This is the cheapest chill mat out of the 4 I've purchased (one was replaced by vendor...replacement died too). It is giving my 2 Microsofts (also Warehouse Deals Used-Like New) a run for their money (LESS than FIFTEEN BUCKS) on the other 15" laptops.
Before the mat installation the router was hot to the touch, 30 minutes after the chill mat installation the router is now cold when touched. If it was not for the display lights on the router, you would think it was not working, as there is no heat that can be felt on the outside of the router.
