One of the main problems is that in this newer model the fans only cover part of the computer, and do not offer much cooling even in those areas. You get just a light breeze. I checked my computer after a while, and still as hot as ever, even with having the Chill Mat going from the moment it was turned on. When I moved the computer to different areas to get the fans exposed to particular "hot spots", it did help, but then it was half falling off the mat, since that wasn't how the computer was designed to be placed on it.
Pros: lip to prevent computer from slipping, adjustable angle, low noise, comfortable
Cons: Fans cover too small an area and don't cool much at all
What I am really disappointed with is the fact that this new one is a full inch shorter. That makes a big difference in the overhang for my 17" laptop. the old one was 15" inches long so I had some overhang but it was fine. I was easily able to pick it up with the laptop comfortably to move it. I use it on my lap mostly. This new one is only 14" inches long. It is quite awkward to reach my fingers around to grip it to move it (girl hands, not big guy hands). It is still advertised for use with a 17" laptop but it's just too small. And the edge where the machine gets the hottest is hanging over too far, if the machine is centered on the pad. Although I have been using it for a couple of hours and it is cooling OK.
But, for this reason, I will be returning this one and purchasing the older version which is still offered for sale. However if you have a smaller laptop, I'm sure you won't be disappointed. The design works well, it's very comfortable to use on your lap, the fans are quiet (at least in my opinion) and it really does cool down a machine. My old one worked great for 4 years of very heavy use. I just wish they hadn't changed the size on this new one.
For this reason I will be returning this
i also have a 17 alienware 4k laptop. That laptop is so big that it makes this chill mat feel like its meant for a 15 inch as it dissappears under the 17 in alienware.. However, once placed correctly on the laptop, it really does cool off. Again you need to make sure you are placing the laptop correctly and align the laptop fan with the pad fan.
At a brick&mortar store in 2015, this cooling stand for my Macbook Pro was $50. Now... this version with a few improvements and a welcome change to some components, is a mere $20. I like the fact that it's sturdy, flows air well, and isn't very noisy (esp compared with other brands' models with smaller, higher-rpm fans). There is a small nub molded into the USB connector for fan power, that hooks into a small slot on both sides of the stand -- to prevent the banging around the nubless original I bought in 2015 did when stowed in a backpack or briefcase.
The fan isn't going to wow anyone with CFMs... but it does flows a generous amount of air without throwing dust the dust that inevitably gets in it everywhere (which is great for those of you like me who live in a windy, hay-fever paradise where dusting is a daily and non-negotiable chore). When it does get dirty inside, it's easy and basic to take apart for a deep clean, just hands and a small phillips screwdriver are all you need.
Not the snazziest or has the biggest feature complement... but it's been reliable but for the fans finally burning out 2 yrs of constant use (at least 8-10 hrs / day). For $20, I got two. :)
I chose this design because I liked how you can adjust the height of the back of the mat. It reduces down to fit into a carrying bag taking up less space. I works very well and there is no issue of it slipping when used open.
I also like how this one has a lip at the bottom to rest the computer on. The previous model used 4 rubber stops to create friction to keep the computer on it. I didn't like it because the stops would fall off and didn't work so well. The lip is a much better improvement.
I also like how on this one the USB cord has a place to clip the USB out of the way when not in use. And the cord is contained inside the mat. The last version the cord was on the back and flopped around ultimately resulting in damaging it and breaking the mat. Smart move putting it inside the mat to protect it and let it last longer.
I love all the upgrades made to this version of the mat. I'm sure its going to last a long time.
