Flora wants a man that she can't seem to have. He's loved by most of the ladies but she believes he wants her above all others. At least, that's what he tells her during their secret trysts in hidden corners. But when push comes to shove, the man she wanted to spend her life with turns out to have a dark secret. One that she didn't predict and leaves her heartbroken and ruined.
Fleeing her home, Flora seeks solace in England, among the elite. She just hopes to hide from her shame but finds a quiet man has his sights on her. Even though she knows she can never be a proper wife for him, she can't help but enjoy the attention he gives her. But when she realizes his true feelings, she has to decide if she can forgive herself and deserve a future of happiness.
This is the third book and the plot was a little more tame than previous books, though there were still some twists and turns. I was surprised by Jasper's secret. I didn't see that coming. Charlie was an odd character who added some color and a lot of humor to the story. He irritated me at times with his interference but he also was genuine when it really counted. And Flora's sister was a great addition to the book. I hope we can see her story in a future installment.
In the previous book of this series, Flora struck me as being a bit immature and naive in many ways. It could be due to her overprotective brother or how she was raised, but I noticed it early on. In this book, her immaturity definitely shows a lot more. I didn't love how it made her do some really dumb things, but I understand that some women just have to learn things the hard way. And she certainly learns some lessons here.
My only complaint is that I wish we could have gotten to know the hero a bit better. Since the story is told from Flora's point-of-view, we only see her side of things. And a lot of her time is spent plotting to get or thinking about the forbidden love who screwed her over. I really liked Andrew and wanted to understand him a little more.
I have no idea who will be the next to find love, but I'm curious to find out. Four suns!
