Pollack’s collection begins with “once upon a time” stories—fairy tales or fables. As the book progresses, the stories include more and more features of the modern, everyday world, though the final one returns to fairy-tale mode. The problem with fairy tale-type stories told in the traditional way is that their characters are types, not individuals, and Pollack’s tales do not rise above this limitation. They also offer advice that any reader of fairy tales will find quite familiar, such as “Be kind, especially to old women and animals,” “Maintain a positive but humble attitude,” and “When making magical requests, choose your words very carefully.”
The addition of realistic elements and the attempt to develop more individualistic characters in the later stories improves them, I think; I found the longest and most realistic story, “Simon Wisdom,” to be the best (though “The Fool, the Stick, and the Princess,” one of pure the fairy tales, was quite charming). Sometimes Pollack, whose skill and interest clearly lie on the magic side of the magic-reality mix, stumbles a bit with the reality part, however: in “Carolina in the Morning,” for instance, a nine-year-old girl who has not previously been said to have any particular knowledge of or ability with computers suddenly shows herself not only able to handle passwords, selections, and deletions but to be able to insert a virus into the bad guy’s hard drive, which seems highly unlikely.
This is one of the earliest of Pollack’s fiction books, and I am happy to report that her later ones, novels rather than short stories, are quire a bit better. I recommend The Fissure King and Godmother Night as better examples of her skill at blending magic and daily life.
The black-and-white paintings by Alex Ukolov add quite a bit to this book.
The stories pull you in, and transport you to another world - and to worlds within that other world. They are magickal, fast moving, and absolutely amazing!
Take another look at the woman pictured on the front cover. Clearly her white face is meant to be a mask. But take another look at her shoulders and arms. To me, t hey have a very porcelan look that indicates that the entire person is wearing a mask, and that if I watch long enough, it will fall away, piece-by-piece, with a whole new person emerging. How often do each of us feel this way about ourselves? Scary, eh!
I was impressed that Rachel listed soemone from her life at the end of each story, indicating that this was who the story was written for. If the reader pays close attention, there is also a fleeting mention of a current Tarot wise-woman that will be familiar to many in the Tarot world.
This is a book that I recommend for someone who is interested in Tarot, someone who is interested in personal/spiritual growth, and someone who is interested in good stories!
In The Tarot of Perfection, Pollack has created a series of tales based on and around the tarot. These tales are like tiny, bardic gems, gently drawing you into the wonderful symbolism of the tarot in the same way a diamond draws you into its depths. It is one of those books that become a precious part of you. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

These short stories are truly wonderful! They touch your mind and bestow it with a gift of vision, that allows you to see the Tarot alive and dancing and with so many new stories to tell you. If the Tarot seems flat and lifeless, these stories will bring it to life and allow you to see it in a wonderful new light.
Rachel has written these stories using the Tarot as inspiration for its highly imaginative characters, situations, twists and turns and intertwines them with deep wisdom and inspiring clarity.
Rachel also provides tips and a Tarot spread, to help you use the Tarot as a guide for writing your own Tarot inspired stories..
Highly recommended!
A great book of short stories, an ok book of tarot guidance.
But I picked this one because it was about Tarot and I enjoyed it so much!
So much that I ordered two other books from her.
But this little book of novels I devored it.
Tarot lovers will delight in this reading !
