Editorial Reviews

Swing into action and adventure with Disney's original classic, TARZAN(R), packed with fun-filled bonus features and award-winning music such as the memorable "You'll Be In My Heart" and "Trashin' The Camp." Disney's magnificent animated adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs's story of the ape man begins deep within the jungle when baby Tarzan is adopted by a family of gorillas. Even though he is shunned as a "hairless wonder" by their leader, Tarzan is accepted by the gorillas and raised as one of their own. Together with his wisecracking ape buddy Terk and neurotic elephant pal Tantor, Tarzan learns how to "surf" and swing through the trees and survive in the animal kingdom. His "Two Worlds" collide with the arrival of humans, forcing Tarzan to choose between a "civilized" life with the beautiful Jane and the life he knows and loves with his gorilla family. Filled with humor, heart, and hilarious fun, TARZAN(R) is an unforgettable adventure you'll watch again and again.~~TARZAN(R) Owned by Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. And Used by Permission. TARZAN (C) Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. and Disney Enterprises, Inc. All Rights Reserved.|With 47 previous movie adaptations, TARZAN(R) is said to be the second most-filmed subject in Hollywood history (topped only by DRACULA) and one of the all-time most popular with moviegoers.|To help prepare them for the film, the directors and a group of artistic supervisors set out on an African safari in March 1996, touring the animal reserves in Kenya, visiting the mountain gorillas in Uganda, and observing Bwindi's Impenetrable Forest.|The city of Tarzana is named after "Tarzan" author Edgar Rice Burroughs' 550-acre Tarzana Ranch, which he later sold to housing developers.|Reportedly, Burroughs was never satisfied with the various screen versions of his book, but according his grandson Danton Burroughs, the Disney version would have pleased his grandfather.

One of the benefits of belonging to the Disney Movie Club, is the ability to get movies before their intended release dates. I just got Tarzan blu ray in the mail this morning, and I wasn't expecting more than the movie and the few paltry extras listed on the packaging. Well imagine my surprise when I popped the disc in and found that it apparently includes all of the material from the long out of print 2 DVD set from years ago!! Someone can check me on this, as I no longer own that set, but this seems to be everything I remember. With this blu ray release you get an improved picture with beautiful colors and clear animation lines, a robust DTS 5.1 soundtrack, and all of these extras.

The Tarzan DVD has a nice Storybook reading feature and some other bonuses, but also has an extremely RUDE feature: When you first start the DVD, Disney shows you 3 minutes of previews before launching the main menu. No fastforwarding or skipping allowed! What a dumb way to cheapen an otherwise great product.

The movie is great, I like it at home as much as I did in the theater, BUT...There appears to be a glitch with the sound. The front left and rear right audio channel is SWITCHED. Disney is aware of this problem (on 1.5 million disks) and isn't doing ANYTHING about it!

The one star I give is because of this version, not the movie itself. THE SOUND IS FAULTY! The left front and rear speaker merge the sound. If you already have purchased this movie I suggest starting it at 31:00 and you will hear the gunshot, noticibly flawed. The thing is, Disney has admitted to the mistake yet comments this does not warrant a recall? Sorry, but if I buy a shirt and it has even a tiny hole, I'm going to want to exchange it for one without the hole. And that exchange should not bring about an argument with the reseller. Disney apparantly does not feel the same way....
For those who have not bought this movie already, WAIT AND THERE WILL BE A SPECIAL EDITION COMING OUT IN APRIL WITH THE MISTAKE CORRECTED. The mistake will also obviously be corrected in future pressings of this edition, but with 700,000 already pressed you would not be able to know if you were getting a 'good' copy. The special edition will also have more extras that so many people have complained the previous Disney releases ignored.
On a brighter side, the movie itself I would rate a 5. The distorted noise doesn't make the movie unwatchable...you just feel cheated. One last comment to a previous response who said that the sound was bad because it was 5.0 instead of 5.1: this is how it was released in theaters as well; it is not a mistake or way of cutting the cost.

Technically, this movie is perfect. Great songs, beautifully designed scenarios, endearable funny characters and a strong feeling of nostalgia for movies that aim to a higher message. Regretfully, whoever is a parent these days is having a lot of trouble to explain the violence shown in cartoons to their sons. Moreover, it's hard to endorse any t.v. cartoons other than Pinky and the Brain or history related ones. Tarzan demonstrates that there is such thing such as a Family Film and that you can create visually stunning gems as this movie and, still, send a message other than gross scenes or blood and guts spilled all over. Thank you, Disney.

After publicizing this release as a 2 disc set, disney finally changed its mind and released it as a barebones single disc. Those who were waiting to get all those great behind the scenes stuff available previously on "tarzan 2 disc collector's edition" will be thoroughly disappointed with this release.

However, those who missed out on previous 2 disc collector's edition and want to own tarzan on a two disc set, still have the option of buying it from amazon.co.uk, where it has been released as a 2-disc special edition with all those behind the scenes stuff from previous collector's edition. Just make sure you have a multi-region dvd player which plays discs from all regions.

Do not buy this unless you just want to own the film. Better still search for the old collector's edition. It will be worth all the money spent.
