Portable Handheld Recorder with Wi-Fi
TASCAM's DR-44WL is the latest recording innovation from TASCAM. It starts with high-quality stereo condenser microphones, updated with a new XY pattern and high-performance mic components. Two locking XLR inputs feed TASCAM's latest microphone preamp design, with the lowest noise level and richest sound available in a portable recorder.
The DR-44WL revolutionizes handheld recorders with its new Wi-Fi feature. A free app for iOS or Android devices provides control, file transfer, and audio streaming to your smartphone. Start recording while on-stage or from anywhere in the room, while setting trim levels and check meters to make sure the transport is running. At the end of a performance, transfer recordings to your phone and instantly upload them to SoundCloud, Facebook, even email directly to fans.
Cardioid Condenser Mics in an X-Y Pattern
Cardioid condenser capsules are mounted in acoustically-tuned housings. As with all TASCAM recorders, the mic capsules were selected after extensive listening tests. The true X-Y pattern captures the stereo field in phase-alignment, for perfect imaging during playback.
Designed To Handle High Sound Pressure Levels – Up to 132dB
The design of the DR-44WL allows it to record loud sound sources, including rehearsals and concerts, without distortion. Up to 132 dB SPL means that a volume level over 10 times higher than the 105dB SPL maximum sound pressure of a movie theater can be captured without clipping. The high level capability also makes the DR-44WL ideal for sound effects gathering.
Shockmount Design Reduces Handling Noise
Each mic capsule is cradled in its own shockmount to prevent vibrations from creating low frequency rumbling on the track. Inspired by high-end studio microphone mounts, the rubber material between the capsule and the body of the unit effectively absorbs movement from trucks passing by, handheld operation, or mounting on a camera or tripod.
Dual-Level Recording Feature Helps Prevent Overload
The DR-44WL includes a limiter to keep levels under control, but an even more effective system is the Dual-Level Recording feature that records two stereo files at different levels. If your recording is distorted, you have a lower level 'safety track' that won't be distorted.
Note: When the Dual-level recording function is enabled, a maximum of two stereo tracks can be recorded simultaneously.

The DR-44WL brings improved audio specs, updated microphones, and WiFi transport control and file transfer to TASCAM's flagship portable audio recorder. The new stereo condenser microphones improve shockmounting and are mounted in a true XY pattern for perfect stereo imaging. A pair of XLR inputs is also available for 4-track recording, and all four feed an improved microphone preamp and AD/DA stage. The DR-44WL includes WiFi for control and file transfer to your smartphone. A free app for iOS, Android, Mac, and Windows devices controls the transport for remote recording start and stop. Audio streams live to your device, and files can be transferred over wireless connection. Instantly share recordings online without moving the DR-44WL from the perfect microphone position. Also available on the DR-44WL is a 4-track multitrack mode, allowing arrangements to be recorded one track at a time with reverb. For video shooters, the recorder includes a hot shoe mount and a stable internal clock to avoid drifting out of sync with your camera. No matter what your application is, the DR-44WL brings the best audio quality and WiFi capabilities together in a powerful & easy-to-use handheld recorder.
Top customer reviews
I can't say enough good things about this recorder. I wish I had bought one years earlier.
Overall, a good option for the money, but don't expect wonders in terms of recording quality. At this price I don't think you can complain too much.
I've used the DR-22WL to record a couple of concerts so far, and so far I've been very impressed. I picked the DR-22WL specifically for the EZ dial presets (I'm not an audio engineer), and the Wi-Fi control. The recorder sits on top of my DSLR (using a shoe-mount adapter) and I can start/stop recording and see/adjust recording levels from my smartphone. Using the Wi-Fi drains the batteries more quickly than when not used (reason for 4 vs. 5 stars). You can use the DR-22WL as an external microphone (adapter for DSLR required) but I haven't tried that yet.
Keep in mind that using a "double system" requires more post-production effort than a single system, as you have to augment or replace the camera recorded audio with the audio from the DR-22WL. For me it's been worth the learning/effort, but if you just want to record and watch/share ... you may want to stick with a single system and use this only as an external microphone.
I don't have anything to compare it to other than my Sony camera which does really well with sound, but this records a much more ambient recording with more depth of sound. Plus it has level input adjustment so even the loudest concert in recent memory (last was Slayer and Megadeth a few years ago - wished I'd had this then!!) comes out sounding great and not distorted and plenty of bass pickup, not flat at all.
well done, well done.
