fun to find a book my family had when I was a child. very challenging.
Reviewed in the United States on September 22, 2015
Oh man; where do I start?! This was the book which started me on my trip around puzzle books. I was delighted with the illustrations by Peter Lavis which almost made you live the story as you worked through the puzzles. OK, some of the puzzles were a bit frustrating, but certainly worth it, and I felt I was certainly getting somewhere.
But then came the tail. And I looked at that enigmatic parchment more times than I cared to think. The clue lay in the line 'Search your rune with open eyes and open mind if you be wise!'
D'you know, it took me almost ten years (yes, that's right, no misprint, ten years!) to solve it. It was frustrating to the extreme. I tried counting words, counting pictures, I even tried counting backwards! Still nothing! However nine-years-and-seven-months later, a little birdy told me to take a long look at the runes...and then...well, you're going to have to figure it out for yourself! Ha; you didn't think I was going to give it away now, did you????? Fully recommended for all the family. And possibly the youngest member will be the one to solve it! Good luck!!

My family spent hours and hours on this book and never could figure it out (kind of frustrating, but fun nonetheless). Years later I discovered it's solution on the internet and it added a whole new level of fun!

This is a sort of activity book, I think for younger readers
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 17, 2020Verified Purchase
This is a sort of activity book, it reminded me of the "hidden items" browser games and mobile phone apps.
I gave it two stars and thought about giving it three as it is nicely illustrated. It is a larger hard cover book with a dust jacket, with the answers included at the end of the book to the questions/searches featured throughout.
However, it is not much like the Fighting Fantasy genre of books that I associated it with. Primarily for completists or collectors. For that audience I would recommend this, for others I would recommend the FF books or their imitators in the gamebook market.
