From the Author
In my opinion, 2011 could be labeled "The Year of Texas Blazes." Our drought-ridden territory suffered scorching temperatures of 100 plus degrees for months. The parched land only served as a catalyst to stoke the savage fury of wildfires. Texas spans more than 170,000,000 acres, and no section of my enormous home state was exempt from the treacherous wrath.
Helpless, I watched the leaves of even young saplings turn an out-of-season brown from lack of rain. Huge Oaks, Elms, and even many of our vast varieties of evergreen Pines lost footing. Too often their struggling root systems surrendered, and statuesque timbers tumbled like the implosion of an outdated condemned building.
I felt as if the uncontrollable devastation, not to mention fear, held my feet and heart in concrete. Folders with birth certificates, college transcripts, precious pictures, childhood memorabilia from our sons and grandkids, along with my Bible, filled the trunk of my car. I tried to stay calm, but prepared for a speedy retreat.
Firefighters, either paid employees or volunteers, valiantly emerged with the courage of a dragon slayer to extinguish the enemy time and time again. Men and women, young and mature, launched into practiced action each time the call went out to save land, homes, and lives.
Therefore, I want to personally praise all the brave 'catastrophe warriors' and recognize their gallant, dedicated, and selfless acts through my mystery novel, Taste of Fire. Thank you ...thank you..., and thank you!
From the Inside Flap
To my Lord and Savior who gave me insight, talent, creativity, resourcefulness, stubbornness, and an open door to follow the journey through this chapter of my life.
Taste of Fire is dedicated to all firefighters, men or women, young or old, active or veteran, paid or volunteers, whose artful and noble heroism I applaud. May God always guide each step to keep you safe.

I expect a book to paint sketches and emotions, to give me characters with layers and depth; there's none of this here. What you will find is poorly written dialogues (who talks like this?!?!), a slow and obvious storyline that drags on for much too long, and too many typos for my taste..I finally gave up and put it down 60% into this Ambien of a novel.
With so many options out there, I'd steer clear.
PS: the uniformity and superficiality of the reviews I read before buying the book really makes me doubt they are bona fide
This book explores a multitude of emotions unraveling an interesting story line that has lots of twists and turns. The past somehow often has a way of popping up in the future. What a creative, imaginative and talented writer Jeannie Faulkner Barber is, AND I especially love her heart for real life heroes.
I enjoyed my time in this book and anticipate that Jeannie will continue to shine as a writer.
~How bout that fourth person in the Fire?....shivers
