Five years ago, Xavier escaped from the Ofarian Plant. Today he calls a Colorado mountain town home. It’s there he buries himself in his work, swearing off magic and relationships—until a woman threatens every promise he’s made to himself.
Cat has always known she is different. Water speaks to her on an uncanny level, and she channels this gift into beautiful painted waterscapes. Now, a gallery is debuting her work in Colorado—and it’ll reveal far more about her than she imagined.
The spark between Cat and Xavier is enough to throw both of them off balance. Every tantalizing moment sends them dangerously close to a rising flood of desire. Dangerous because Xavier comes to suspect that Cat is an Ofarian—his people’s enemy. But they’re both about to discover a far greater, more malicious power at play...

The leading man, Xavier, started out as a 'bad' guy in the previous book, Liquid Lies (The Elementals), before making a very heroic sacrifice. When we run into him again here he is still very damaged - his past is ugly and very hard to leave behind - but Xavier has found a way to cope although it is by keeping himself very controlled and very isolated, so he doesn't really fit into our world. All that changes when he meets his leading lady artist Cat, her innate joy calls to him and makes him want to try to reach beyond the isolation that has helped him to survive. But what really connects the pair beyond an immediate and intense physical attraction, is that Cat's 'need' to paint is very similar to Xavier's 'need' to cook and they 'get' each other on that level.
Since Xavier's damage is very tied to his sexuality (and abuse connected to that), I was worried that the author was going to squick me out when she got to the sensual parts of the romance, but that wasn't the case and this is one of those stories where the sensual parts were key to the story and not just a sex break - and while Xavier's relationship with Cat is very steamy, they are not just about sex.
In addition to the romance, there are also other things going on story wise having to do with other 'special' not quite humans involving kidnappings and a major drama when two past lovers meet. Though I did have some minor nits with the way some of these other parts played out - the most significant being that there was a part of the story in which Xavier's past comes knocking that was totally predictable - I do have to say that the ending was so well done that it overcame all of those nits.
So I enjoyed A Taste of Ice even more than I liked Liquid Lies (you could probably read this story without having read that book.) Now I am very much looking forward to Griff's story, and I am so happy to have just discovered that he gets a whole book, I thought that the upcoming short in Unbound (anthology) was his, so glad I was wrong.
