The technical stuff: The cover of this book is drop dead sexy. If I hadn't already wanted to read it, that cover would have had me clicking to see what the story was about. This book is technically book 3 of the “Bourbon Brothers” series, and although the first books in the series are fabulous stories and should be read for that reason, you *do not* have to read them to enjoy this one. There is both on screen sex and cursing (including f-bombs) in this book so if those will cause you to leave a bad review of the story, then you should skip this one.
As someone who is familiar with the affects that alcohol can have on a family, on a life, this book touched a nerve that I wasn't expecting, and I mean that 100% in a positive way. *SPOILERS to end of paragraph* Nick's struggle with alcoholism (does he want to kiss Eve because she's sexy or because she's been drinking bourbon?) is just so beautifully written. I love that Ms. Stanley didn't write the usual romance “I'm an alcoholic but I can just have one drink and be totally fine, no big deal” fodder that frustrates me to no end when I read it. Instead of taking the easy (and totally ridiculous) road, Ms. Stanley wrote a character who knew that even one drink would be too much for him and he wouldn't take that risk. Even after being sober for five years, Nick knows that it's better not to tempt fate. So often alcoholism is a throw-away plot, used to make the character seem sympathetic, but that isn't the case with Nick at all, it is a part of him, and it is never glossed over or treated as something simple and I LOVED that.
But despite the serious nature of Nick's backstory, this book is full of the laugh out loud moments that I have come to expect and love in Ms. Stanley's books so please don't be scared off by that previous paragraph. This story is still a lighthearted and adorable love story that will make you laugh.
Eve was a little bit neurotic (in a good way) and incredibly organized, but she was also a little bit of a hot mess. She was so determined to keep the family legacy going that she wasn't living her own life. Watching her change and grow over the course of this book was fabulous, and I especially enjoyed her part in the final few chapters. As someone with an addiction to office supplies, I found myself laughing and LOVING her fetish for post-its and paper clips and pens that write oh so smoothly (oh maybe I'm projecting on that last one).
If you enjoy a book about two fabulous characters who fall in love despite the differences that should keep them apart, and a story about things that go so much deeper than the usual fluffy romance novel fodder (which I also love so that is not meant to be an insult!) than you should give this book a read. It was a fabulous, wonderful way to end this series.
I requested and was generously granted an ARC of this book. I was under no obligation at all to write this review. I wrote it because I very much enjoyed the story.
Nick has no intentions of staying in town long. Once his dad is out of the hospital, and Nick has found someone to watch over him, he's gone. His dad is, was, and will remain an alcoholic and Nick wants no part of it. In the meantime, upon meeting the beautiful Eve and learning of her plight, and slight desperation to get the job finished on time, Nick decides to help her, and if, during there business arrangement, something more intimate arises...
"Such language from such a sweet girl. And she was sweet. Which was just complicating matters, because he continually found himself wanting to please her." - Nick
As Nick, the anti-planner, and Eve, the queen of it, began working together closely, their mutual attraction becomes even more intense. However, both have their demons and they revolve around the same thing, which happens to be part of Eve's family's legacy. See, Eve's Dad was also an alcoholic, just like Nick's. However, he lost his fight with his addiction, causing him to take his own life. So, understandably, Eve is cautious in regards to those with the same issue, but she doesn't know Nick's secret. Nick traveled the same path as his dad, thankfully though, he detoured toward sobriety and had stayed there for five years. This job, the temptation of not only the proximity of liquor but Eve herself, is sorely testing his restraint and he's worried...one of those things will prove to be irresistible. The question is, which one?
Will Nick come through for Eve and complete her project on time? Will Eve's dedication to her dad and brother be all she'd hoped for? Will Raleigh, Nick's dad, be able to fight his dependency on alcohol? Will Nick and Eve continue fighting their connection? Will they act on it, even knowing it won't be anyhing more than temporary? But it can be so much more too, right? Will Nick and Eve get their HEA?
One-click now and follow along as Nick and Eve, both struggling with their own pasts, realize simultaneously that while you can't organize everything, sometimes fate already has plans in place for you.
