Born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, he came of age—preciously and self-importantly—in first Chicago and then New York City, and with the world in a postwar cultural flux, Van Vechten took action. My peccadillo is that the book feels like more of a primer to Van Vechten's life than the type of in-depth biography that I had hoped for. Especially given the surfeit of primary source material that the author alludes. The complete lack of coverage of his life in the late 40s/'50s, is particularly irritating. Its as if the author got bored or burned out by the story. I appreciated the writing, but had hoped for more.
