Top customer reviews
I looked through the reviews on here form my fellow Star Realms players. Some said it was an improvement, some said a slight downgrade. The game play is a blast and I love how it gives you enough starter decks for four instead of two players.
For the first game and a half I had a little trouble with the symbols, as compared to the written-out instructions in Star Realms, but that went away and there is zero confusion now. Because of color blindness I had a little trouble telling purple and green ability requirements apart when in low lighting, but then I realized all but one card has requirements that match it's own color.
The art is fantastic, the feel is great and if you have Star Realms, this will feel like a different game. No one-cost cards to buy, a nice trick to remove a card from the center row and then pull it back into the game and placed on top of your deck. I paired that with a card draw ability in a game and felt like a master strategist.
Cthulhu does have a bit more of a learning curve than Star Realms for sure. The symbols are really confusing at first, but they aren't bad once you get used to them. I think they're sort of a necessary evil given the amount of information each card needs to convey.
I like the illustrations on the cards a lot too. They're just the right blend of fun and creepy.
Overall, it's a great game. I know my husband and I will be playing it a lot.
The downside to this game is that it isn't necessarily short. Even when it isn't your first play through the game is definitely not going to conclude in a half hour, which is a bit of a shame, because it seems kind of shallow after that (you're just trying to knock other players out of the game by diminishing their sanity). Still though, this is a highly portable game that offers you a lot of action per turn. It can be a lot of fun if your group digs Lovecraft.
